Wavelength

Wavelength Van Morrison sings: "Waaaaaaaaavelength..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePm3FhAfGOo When I was younger, I pored through my ARRL Handbook, built a crystal set with windings around a Quaker Oats can, strung a wire in the attic, the whole deal. But I crashed and burned on the whole Morse code thing. Morse code seemed to be for prison escape movies, and not for adventures in Spaaaaaace. I went on to work in radio and television, including doing a little broadcast tower and point to point microwave stuff. But I never got a ham license. However, as befits my increasing age, general crankiness, the elimination of the requirement for 13 wpm of code, and the amazingly feature rich, cheap radios from Baofeng... I let my arm get twisted into taking the test a couple of weeks ago. I kind of surprised myself by passing. Undoubtedly the saving throw was when they asked a couple of questions about tubes, just as if people still use the dang things. As you can imagine, th...

Still Afloat

Still Afloat Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh Lovely. "LONDON — The two men who run London’s only floating bookstore, Word on the Water, are living proof that there really is something you can do in life with an English lit degree, other than teach English literature. The store — a 50-foot-long canalboat stuffed to its bulkheads and overflowing onto the towpath with books — has a permanent berth on the Regent’s Canal, around the corner from the British Library. This comes after years of its owners staying one step ahead of eviction from the canals, by relocating fortnightly. It is doing so well that Paddy Screech, 51, an Oxford-educated Cornishman with a close-trimmed beard and a soft-spoken manner, and Jonathan Privett, 52, a gaptoothed Yorkshireman who has trouble staying still for long (except with a book), finally took their dream vacations this year. Mr. Screech, who describes himself as “Buddhish,” meaning sort of Buddhist, went to Laos. Mr. Privett, once nicknamed the “Si...

In fact, it appeared that Trump’s account was essentially protected from being deactivated over Terms of Service violations. In June, Twitter explained why: Some tweets that seemingly violate its terms of service are nevertheless “newsworthy” and therefore in the public interest to keep up. Mr. Blue

Mr. Blue I enjoyed various parts of PHC over the years, but I won't miss it as much as The Writer's Almanac. I enjoyed the Mr. Blue agony columns he used to write. It showed a more realistic, messier side to the man. Anybody remember H.L. Mencken, the Sage of Baltimore? He hated a lot of things, including women, until he married one. He wrote this epitaph in jest: "If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl." After Keillor gets his comeuppance for whatever bad thing he did, maybe he'll straighten up and do better. I'm all for giving bad behavior just desserts. But it's best to leave some room for corrective behavior and the possibility of redemption. But of course I'd say that, wouldn't I? https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/11/29/567241644/garrison-keillor-accused-of-inappropriate-behavior-minnesota-public-radio-says

Meritocratic Myopia

Meritocratic Myopia And not just Ta-Nehisi Coates. This article is more verbose than it needs to be, but it makes some good points. There is an awful lot of systemic inequality going around these days. Unfortunately, it's going to be hard for organized "labor" to fight a system that increasingly doesn't need it. Try imagining all the "gig" labor folks you know (some of which are quite highly paid) organizing themselves for political purposes. Go ahead. But All I've Got Is A Photograph

But All I've Got Is A Photograph And I Realize You're Not Coming Back Anymore... Originally shared by **** November 24, 1973 - “Photograph” by Ringo Starr hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written by Ringo Starr and George Harrison, it is the first solo chart topper for the former Beatle drummer. Ringo Starr’s self-titled third album, has its genesis in early 1973 after producer Richard Perry (Nilsson, Captain Beefheart) asks Starr if he’ll be a presenter at the Grammy Awards which are being telecast in Nashville, TN that year. Starr in turn suggests to Perry that they work together. Perry accepts the offer, quickly assembling musicians and booking studio time in L.A.. They record five songs in five days including all three major singles from the album. Ringo calls on his former Beatle band mates including George Harrison, who writes two songs for the project, with he and Starr collaborating on “Photograph”. Hey! Bo Diddley!

Hey! Bo Diddley! Originally shared by **** November 20, 1955 - R&B legend Bo Diddley makes his one and only appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan requests that Diddley perform the song “Sixteen Tons’, he defies the host by performing his current hit "Bo Diddley” on the live telecast. This angers Sullivan, and Diddley is banned from ever appearing on the show again. Though the major national television exposure introduces him to wider audience beyond his loyal R&B fan base. Though he never appears on the show again, Bo Diddley’s signature syncopated rhythm becomes one of the most influential in the history of rock & roll, inspiring countless songs from Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” and The Strangeloves’ “I Want Candy” to Bruce Springsteen’s “She’s The One” and George Michael’s “Faith”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38G5MKn3jlw&feature=player_embedded

Doing Hard Things

Doing Hard Things I have hard things to do today. And the day after, and the day after that, and on for quite awhile. I have done hard things before. It doesn't seem to make it easier. More familiar, maybe. Still hurts. This song has some sweet, hopeful things to say about that. But what it doesn't say? The part that you really can't say, about how hard things can be, but you have to keep going anyway? That's the part that makes me cry, sometimes, when I hear this song. And one other thing. A lot of hard things? You have to do them by yourself. Nobody can do them for you. But having the support of others? That's a priceless gift. Takes away some of the misery, helps heal the wounds. And for me? Biscuits. Biscuits help. Carrie Newcomer. Parker Palmer. If you don't know of them, maybe you ought to. Smart, talented, passionate people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRGnftH_g4I
