Y'all Yodel Along, Now

Y'all Yodel Along, Now

Like a lot of things, this is partly Jimmie Rodgers fault. Also, a woman. In a bar.

You could write a song about that.

I came across composer Sol K. Bright's performance in the 1921 of his song, "Hawaiian Cowboy." That was the year a paniolo (cowboy from Hawaii) won the rodeo in San Francisco. Sol was asked to make up a song. It's a fast tongue-twister song with complex lyrics.

My wife could sing it. I couldn't even try. It's too fast. I believe it's easier if you're Hawaiian, but don't take my word for it. My wife didn't even speaka the language although she was 50%. Her grandmother and mother refused to teach their kids because they thought that the kids should learn to speak "standard English" to make it in the 20th century. The government tried to erase the language, even though there were numerous songs, books, and newspapers written in Hawaiian. It was, after all, the official language of the country.

I've always liked Willie K, a guitar virtuoso with a credible voice. If you went to his shows when he was entertaining in smoky badly-lit rooms, if you waited until the last hours, he would play rock and roll and not stick to Hawaiian. He was a rock musician first, I understand.

His version of Hawaiian cowboy follows, it's a performance filmed for the inflight entertainment on Hawaiian airlines. I like it because the lyric is so clear. If you check youTube you'll find many other artists who covered the song. I thought "Roselani" was a girl, but it's a horse.

Willie K also has a tribute to Prince (who came and jammed with him once) and played along with Steven Tyler on Dream On. He's an amazing Hawaiian artist.

as always watch full screen and in HD.
