HALO Effect

HALO Effect Originally shared by Noah Friedman This is how automation is probably going to kill us all: tell a computer to optimize for something and it will. (This observation is just a variation on the nanotech grey goo problem.)

Precursor

Image
Precursor Michael Lang: "Miami Pop was my first Festival and made a profound impression on me about the power of music to bring people together. Ric O'Barry and I came up with the Idea sitting around my Kitchen table in Coconut Grove. It was a 2 day affair and the first day was Magic. The second day was rained out. (Jimi Hendrex wrote a song about it - RAINY DAY, DREAM AWAY : "Well I can see a bunch of wet creatures / Look at 'em, on the run / The carnival traffic noise, it sings / The tune splashing up / Even the ducks can groove ...") The Festival was produced by Ric and I, Barry Taran, James McBarren, and Marshall Brevitz. I guess you can say a seed for Woodstock was planted there, just as one was planted when Artie Kornfeld embraced music as his path in life. These seeds bore fruit during the fall of 1968. After weeks of talks between Artie and I and Artie's wife Linda we had one of those "eureka" moments and Woodstock began to take shape. The r...

Like all Old People, I find myself repeating certain likes and dislikes over the years, so I expect I'll consolidate certain posts into canonical items that will be added to. I'm also inclined, due to the ephemeral nature of links, to store snapshots of external pages. Not sure what format I'll choose, or what rights issues will ensue. I've downloaded Google Takeout a few times. It is a remarkably unstructured mess. No wonder the Algorithm can't figure me out. I'm likely to try importing to Blogger and Wordpress, see how that shakes out. Not sure how the "social" part will work. Probably Twitter, Pluspora? One of my problems with Socia...

When He's Sixty Four

When He's Sixty Four Not Just A Gigolo. Diamond Dave weighs in on various topics of interest, and a new line of skin care products for the Tattooed You. The Road: "But for some musicians, experience is a fatal funnel. You say to them, “So, you’re making a new record — but what’s new now?” And they say, “We’ve been on a tour.” And that always becomes the same story, and you’ll hear it in the music. Or not. It’s like the opposite of the 14th minute of The Wizard of Oz. Instead of the color coming in, the color goes away. How did that happen? Because the life of a rock star is a limiting existence. Actually, it closely resembles that of a federal witness: You’re inside a hotel room with handlers. You’re transported urgently to a waiting vehicle. Then you’re whisked somewhere public, but first you’re taken down into the cement basement where you wait in a room. And then you’re taken upstairs and judged. Harshly." IFR

IFR So things were thoroughly socked in yesterday. We had to navigate 6 nm downriver to the race start area. GPS is definitely a great help, but it has limitations. The new boat doesn't have any compasses installed, yet, and GPS is noticeably laggy and inaccurate at actual heading. Fortunately, I had a handheld stowed in my bag. Spent a fair amount of time in the pulpit, scanning for markers and traffic with ears and eyes. 6 knts doesn't sound very fast, until you start doing the math to convert to fps when visibility extends between 10 to 20 yds. Was fun playing Marco Polo to find the committee boat at the end. We were The Only Ones dedicated/stupid enough to show up. Race was eventually called off, so we tinkered a bit, and then slogged home. Using GPS on our phones is interesting. A very feature rich experience for not much money, but touchscreens get fussy when wet, and they aren't always bright enough for sunny days. Dedicated tactile controls are hard to live ...

What Would Lenny Bruce Do?

What Would Lenny Bruce Do? Vincent Cuccia, one of the Assistant District Attorneys who tried the case: “I feel terrible about Bruce. I watched him gradually fall apart. It's the only thing I did in Hogan's office that I'm really ashamed of. We all knew what we were doing. We used the law to kill him.” What District Attorney Frank Hogan and his men thought they were doing was erecting an impenetrable barrier to obscenity and pornography in New York. License Inspector Herbert Ruhe: “We aimed for Bruce. We picked him out of all the performers. ... I know he was not obscene... yet in a way I feel he had to be convicted. I rationalize it this way: ‘O.K., Bruce is not obscene, but he does use 4‐ and 10‐letter words. If he uses them, then other people will use them—people who are not talented and who have no ideas. We'll have people paying $2 to hear some character say “mother___” five times in 10 minutes. So, I figure, if we prosecute Bruce, we cut off the use of those kinds ...

Redactomother

Redactomother Is what I called the damned thing. The public radio station I worked at had acquired it from somewhere, probably the federal surplus depot. It did not have a display, but it did let you generate personalized form letters, using arcane formatting characters. If you screwed up, you had to start from the beginning. I could only get it to run the merge function properly when I gave it a stern talk, and leaned a twelve pound sledge against it, as a threat against poor performance. It was innovative, but complicated and unreliable enough that it was never highly prized. via Ray Radlein Originally shared by Frederick Wilson II https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/obituaries/evelyn-berezin-dead.html

Wickedness

Image
Wickedness "A Danish cattleman named Axel Hansen later said he was near the Snake River and tipping a teaspoon of saleratus into a yearling's mouth when he heard a faint groaning in the north that was like the noise of a high waterfall at a fair distance. Axel looked toward Dakota, and there half the sky was suddenly gray and black and indigo blue with great storm clouds that were seething up as high as the sun and wrangling toward him at horse speed. Weeds were being uprooted, sapling trees were bullwhipping, and the top inches of snow and prairie soil were being sucked up and stirred like the dirty flour that was called red dog. And then the onslaught hit him hard as furniture, flying him onto his back so that when Axel looked up, he seemed to be deep undersea and in icehouse cold. Eddying snow made it hard to breathe any way but sideways, and getting up to just his knees and hands seemed a great attainment. Although his sod house was but a quarter-mile away, it took Axel fo...

"We’ve Lapped The Field On Crazy" "It was literally boxes. Sydney [Pollock] had died and then there was this delivery of all this stuff. There were just reams of documents and releases and things. There was an invoice to pay the choir director for lip-reading, and that was the tip-off that something is not right here. I started just going backward in sort of a detective way: Why were they lip-reading? It was, Oh, they don’t have any sync. There is no work print. There is no assemblage that he had made. Sydney had no experience doing documentaries. Sydney’s guys were turning the cameras on and turning them off, so they had thousands of pieces of footage in 1972, where footage hung on a clothesline with a hook and then had to be synched up to a quarter-inch piece of tape, so they had no chance." https://www.vulture.com/2018/12/the-story-behind-aretha-franklins-delayed-doc-amazing-grace.html
