What Would Lenny Bruce Do?

Vincent Cuccia, one of the Assistant District Attorneys who tried the case: “I feel terrible about Bruce. I watched him gradually fall apart. It's the only thing I did in Hogan's office that I'm really ashamed of. We all knew what we were doing. We used the law to kill him.”

What District Attorney Frank Hogan and his men thought they were doing was erecting an impenetrable barrier to obscenity and pornography in New York.

License Inspector Herbert Ruhe: “We aimed for Bruce. We picked him out of all the performers. ... I know he was not obscene... yet in a way I feel he had to be convicted. I rationalize it this way: ‘O.K., Bruce is not obscene, but he does use 4‐ and 10‐letter words. If he uses them, then other people will use them—people who are not talented and who have no ideas. We'll have people paying $2 to hear some character say “mother___” five times in 10 minutes. So, I figure, if we prosecute Bruce, we cut off the use of those kinds of words at the source.”

  1. I like how the oppressor years afterward tries to blow smoke up yo ass.

  2. Lenny’s 10 letter word would present some logistical challenges if applied to the picture above.

  3. We are truly living in the future, are we not?

  4. I love that the giant penis was apparently OK, but not the fake cig. (Hell, most theatres around here use "puff cigarettes" that expel a small puff of talcum powder when blown into - not inhaled, that would be bad - to simulate smoking.)
