King Of The Night

King Of The Night

"You have to believe that what you take is what you give."

Caxton's "The Game And Playe Of Chesse", long believed to be the first book printed in English, was a speculum regis, or a mirror for a prince.

The book doesn't actually describe the game, but is something of an allegory of fixed social structures where each rank has its allotted role.

  1. Watching this is a bit surreal, because this shop is right across the street from me. I mean literally where I live, my home, where I am sitting as I type this. And I know the store and have been there, I remember when it first opened, yet the film showed me a lot I didn't know in all these years. And the ending as he walks down Thompson Street into Washington Square Park captures something indefinable about living here.

(Now if I start resharing videos about BBQ joints in North Carolina or something, no complaints, right? It's only fair.)
