They looked at zeldman.com and wrongly imagined all that tranquil Apple white background turning orange..." "Jobs called my client. He called him all kinds of things. I always picture the scene taking place in Jobs’s house. The next morning, the client called to tell Doug and me that we would not be working on apple.com ." There's A New Sheriff In Town Cuius Testiculos Habes, Habeas Cardia Et Cerebellum. Originally shared by Tamsin Cheyne The UK is under new leadership this morning following a coup by the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, Lord Havelock Vetinari. “Coup is a needlessly dramatic word,” Lord Vetinari told reporters. “I can hardly be said to have violently thrown a government from power when you don’t have one, or an Opposition. Both sides seem entirely preoccupied with what one might call ‘internal matters’. Indeed barely anyone noticed as I walked into Number Ten and installed myself in the best office and Drumknott in an suitable alcove nearby. The only person to do more than raise an eyebrow was Theresa May who I must say kicks like a mule and has a command of the baser aspects of the English language that is entirely formidable.” Until yesterday Vetinari was the tyrant of Ankh-Morpork the largest and most powerful city on Discworld. In A Messy Divorce The Kids Won't Be Alright... Originally shared by **** Only days now until the referendum, in or out. We're told it's needed because we've not had a say for a while. On that basis, we could have referenda on many issues, such as the monarchy, Nato, the Commonwealth, the UN and so on. No, the fact is, this referendum is Cameron's Folly, a clever wheeze to fend off UKIP at the last general election. The polls suggest a Brexit and by a wide margin. So, before our leaving the EU, some thoughts. When we leave, the same argument over sovereignty can be used to leave Nato (do we want a war with Russia over the Ukraine, or Turkey, or some Baltic enclave?). I doubt we'd be so rational. I think the non-EU companies which have invested heavily in the UK did so to sell easily into Europe. When we leave, these many jobs will go to Eastern Europe, causing widespread unemployment and loss of trade. Those in the ruling Conservative Party who argue for Brexit ...

Who's Holding The Bag?

Who's Holding The Bag? Counterfeit fashion is one thing. Counterfeit engineering is another. Premium brands always face pressure on price by "good enough" copies, especially when the originals were long ago outsourced to who knows where. Brand loyalty goes both ways... It's interesting that the article said that the differential between American and Chinese production costs was much narrower now, $1 to $0.96. I'd guess that only applies to high end materials fabrication, but it still makes one wonder if a renaissance (of sorts) of American manufacturing is possible. The claim is not about search results. It's about autocomplete suggestions . People are claiming that Google has manipulated the suggestions that show up when you type in "Hillary Clinton cri" -- for some reason, it doesn't complete to "criminal". Apparently, the expectation is that if a search is popular, it should show up as a suggestion. This is not how it works: it's way more complicated. What Would Frank Wood Do

What Would Frank Wood Do Frank Wood has left the building, I hear. Frank was an engineer for the BBC, starting sometime in the mid sixties, I believe. He was known to wax eloquently and at length about the wonders of Kudelski's Nagra III, or Strand's Patt. 743 fresnels, and the necessity of proper balancing, isolation, and earthing of signal cables of all kinds. He was also wont to express bafflement concerning US electrical codes and configuration. That did not, however, stop him from offering insight and advice about such, even when it was frequently wrong (sometimes dangerously so), or off-topic. I "met" Frank on Usenet, first on RATS (rec.arts.theatre.stagecraft) and then the SML (stagecraft mailing list). Frank had his own ideas about how the internet should work, and was famous for replying to digest posts, and refusing to properly trim replies, among other things. Wait No More

Wait No More The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph mistakenly published an obituary for Mr. Swarbrick in 1999. “It’s not the first time I’ve died in Coventry,” he remarked afterward. Dave Swarbrick regularly appeared at Fairport Convention’s Cropredy festival in Oxfordshire long after his obituary was printed prematurely in the Daily Telegraph. At a public rehearsal before the festival one year, he turned up, hard of hearing, and with the oxygen cylinder that he needed to cope with his emphysema. Fairport started a song, Swarbrick came in late, and they all stopped. “That’s all right, Dave,” said the guitarist and vocalist Simon Nicol. “If the Grim Reaper can wait for you, so can we.” Ye'll be missed, Swarb. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/05/arts/music/dave-swarbrick-british-folk-fiddler-dies-at-75.html?mwrsm=GooglePlus

The Old Mare

The Old Mare Originally shared by Timothy Street No country for old men - "Sailing to Byzantium" , W.B. Yeats The waters of the Iroise are located in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Brittany, France - an infamous area for sailors. Those familiar with the Hornblower novels of C.S. Forester will recognize the setting of Hornblower and the Hotspur , in which the writing excelled with descriptions of ship handling, navigation, and seamanship. This short of the lighthouses of the Iroise enduring storms reiterates the danger of taking to the sea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eiXC3_Sm7Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eiXC3_Sm7Y

One Percent Wrong

One Percent Wrong Dan Jenkins once said this about Tiger Woods: “He is a hell of a talent,” Jenkins told me. “He just happens to be an asshole." I'm beginning to think the same thing about Dan Jenkins. He's still funny, though. Note To Self: Nobody does bitter and hateful like Old Guys. http://www.golfdigest.com/story/dan-jenkins-vs-john-feinstein-the-utterly-outrageous-golf-digest-political-blog

Anti-Romantic

Anti-Romantic “Dan always had a different slant on things than most everybody else, and 99 percent of the time he was right,” said Jack Nicklaus. “I can’t even think of the 1 percent he was not right.” “I love Fort Worth,” Jenkins said. “I always have. I think it was because it was funny.” The city begat the prose. Jenkins indulged Fort Worth’s affinity for compound words. Money-whipped. Overgolfed. Man-tailored. Hurt-somebody — an adjective: “hurt-somebody party-queens.” Outlung — which means to have bigger breasts than someone. From Semi-Tough: “Barbara and I could outlung that girl, anytime." http://grantland.com/features/dan-jenkins-pga-majors-masters-ben-hogan-golf-sports-writing/

What's Ban-Lon Got To Do With It? "They were meant to be costumes: look-at-me uniforms to wear to the revolution. They were never practical. They still aren't. If you look at the best of the current collections inspired by these eras, you'll discover that Xeroxing from the archives is an illusion." http://www.nytimes.com/1993/06/27/style/what-s-ban-lon-got-to-do-with-it.html via Cara Evangelista Originally shared by Amanda Gordon Bright green knitted Ban-Lon with a matching bra top beneath, and black/white dotted spandex shorts by Cole of California | 📷 George Barkentin | Mademoiselle magazine | 1963
