It’s a toss-up, to be honest)." https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/carol-midgley-ill-tell-you-whats-wrong-with-midlife-sex-the-telly-zqf26dfht In my time here on the planet, I have: owned a TV set, swept chimneys, and been to the dump. The World's Most Popular Drug Originally shared by John Wehrle On Wednesday, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a statement that "if a state law purports to require food labeling to include a false or misleading statement, the FDA may decide to step in." He added that a large body of research found little evidence that coffee causes cancer and instead suggested that it might reduce the risk of some cancers: "Strong and consistent evidence shows that in healthy adults moderate coffee consumption is not associated with an increased risk of major chronic diseases, such as cancer, or premature death, and some evidence suggests that coffee consumption may decrease the risk of certain cancers." https://www.npr.org/2018/08/30/643246149/coffee-does-not-merit-cancer-warning-label-ordered-in-california-fda-says

Tails Out

Tails Out It's also worth mentioning that tape drive manufacturers are notorious for changing specs and standards to enforce vendor lock in, and forced upgrades. Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh "Studies show [PDF] that the amount of data being recorded is increasing at 30 to 40 percent per year. At the same time, the capacity of modern hard drives, which are used to store most of this, is increasing at less than half that rate. Fortunately, much of this information doesn’t need to be accessed instantly. And for such things, magnetic tape is the perfect solution. Seriously? Tape? The very idea may evoke images of reels rotating fitfully next to a bulky mainframe in an old movie like Desk Set or Dr. Strangelove. So, a quick reality check: Tape has never gone away! Indeed, much of the world’s data is still kept on tape, including data for basic science, such as particle physics and radio astronomy, human heritage and national archives, major motion pictures, banking, insurance...

A Class Act

A Class Act Elsewhere, I said that McCain was a class act. This is what I meant. He comported himself well, and wore his privilege easily. I disagreed with nearly every policy decision he ever made, and some were scandalously awful and self-serving. Politicians are frequently, often, dependably, Creatures of Focused Expediency, and not Good People, or Farsighted Leaders. But he was loved by his family and his supporters, and often respected by his opponents. That ain't nothing. https://maddogmedia.com/2018/08/26/john-mccain-goes-west/

Temple Burn

Image
Temple Burn Originally shared by Trey Ratcliff This is the night of the Temple Burn. The temple is a special place where people take keepsakes from loved ones that have died or they simply go write on the wood inside... they write things they would never say in the real world. The burning of it is somewhat of a symbol of letting that thing go. If you're an emotional, sensitive person, you really can't hang out in there too long. You might just look at 1/3000 scrawlings that says something like, "Nobody loves me." and then, another person, underneath, will write, "That's not true, I do." Stuff like that.. anyway, this year I'm taking a photo of my dad holding my son Ethan. I'll write something. I'm not sure what yet. #BurningMan

This was certainly true for the diminutive, 17-year-old singer named Eva Narcissus Boyd, who scored her first and only #1 hit on this day in 1962 — 56 years ago — with "The Loco-Motion." Eva Boyd was newly arrived in New York City from her native North Carolina and looking for work when a neighbor in Brooklyn pointed her toward the job that would end up changing her life — working as a nanny for a young, professional Manhattan couple. It just so happened that the couple looking for a new babysitter were Gerry Goffin and Carole King, future members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame then working for the legendary, Don Kirshner, as salaried songwriters at Aldon Music. In the early 1960s, Goffin and King were bus...

You Can't Always Get What You Want Appliances as Apps. Originally shared by Robert Rambusch William Perry approved this message As I’ve begun to eye replacements, I’ve noticed that if I want certain features, such as French doors that won’t block my small kitchen, I must also have an appliance that is Internet-ready, in case I wish to email rather than speak to the refrigerator in person. Nor can I decide that I’d like to trade higher electricity bills for a longer life span; the government has already made that decision for me. Frustratingly, it’s not even clear that this is good for the environment, because it takes quite a lot of energy and materials to manufacture the appliances we’re regularly throwing away. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/to-a-refrigerator-dying-young/2018/08/21/7d542068-a561-11e8-a656-943eefab5daf_story.html https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/to-a-refrigerator-dying-young/2018/08/21/7d542068-a561-11e8-a656-943eefab5daf_story.html

Drunken Sailors AKA Demon Rum Imbibers, do not Drunk Shoppe On Ye Amazon. The list of things they do instead is too long to fit in one post, and several involve bodily harm (to oneself, to others) and some lead to periods of incarceration and other forms of regret. Originally shared by Al Tlön

Finest Kind

Finest Kind It's perhaps fitting that all the versions of M*A*S*H had awkward and schlocky parts, and didn't have much in common with each other, or like each other, much. It's a little light on appreciating the writers of the TV show, but this article makes a lot of good points. Like a lot of things, I read the book, then saw the movie, then watched the TV show. You might not know that the real Trapper John, John Lyday, was from North Carolina. Originally shared by Damn interesting https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/what-mash-taught-us

Well Traveled

Well Traveled The main sheet traveler. A weighty and expensive bit of hardware from Garhauer. Multiple points of purchase for all that Dacron flogging in the wind. Good news? There is more clearance for knuckle heads under the boom. Bad news? Running backstays to muck with.

High Aspect

Image
High Aspect 61' from the base of the mast to the aerial. We are taking great pains to bombproof things so that none of us will have to go up the mast in the bosun's chair. Also, the directional indicator will have to be an order of magnitude bigger in order to be seen from below.

Unchain (Plated)

Unchain (Plated) There is no corrosion like twenty five year old corrosion. And no tenacity like the tenacity of fully cured 5200. The evolution also proved once again that all needed parts will, at the most inconvenient time, go away to the deepest, darkest, most inaccessible part of the bilge. Even the parts associated with the standing rigging, laying on bucks outside the boat.

The trend for the big, in-your-face stuff has been going on for probably 25 years. People who wear aloha shirts want to be noticed. They find regular repeating designs to be boring. Two-color prints are boring. If you want to attract attention to yourself, then the textile print becomes important. -- Linda Arthur, Washington State University professor and curator When I came to Washington State University, I brought my passion for ethnic textiles and clothing with me. Our historic costume collection here at WSU now has increased in size as a result. We now have nearly 100 aloha shirts in our collection here at Washington State University. The University of Hawaii, where I taught from 1991 to 2002, has about 5,000 items of aloha attire, probably half of which are aloha shirts. This collection is in the Apparel Product Design and ...

Grading On The Ball Curve

Grading On The Ball Curve Originally shared by Andres Soolo A TôkÅ·o medical school has been caught lying to applicants it thought didn't have penises that they did badly in their entrance exams. An unnamed source described the unofficial policy as a “necessary evil”, introduced over fears too many women would later leave the profession to get married and start a family. “Many female students who graduate end up leaving the medical practice to give birth and raise children,” the source said. [...] According to university insiders with knowledge of the scheme, the doctoring of tests was carefully planned – a specific coefficient was used to artificially lower the scores of all women applying to the institution. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/tokyo-medical-exam-results-female-doctors-grades-changed-medicine-a8475966.html

The John Egerton School Of...

Image
The John Egerton School Of... Rabble Rousing, Haiku Spouting, Book Writing, Close Talking, Sausage Making, and South Fixing. “Most of us never ate fried green tomatoes and most of us never will,” he said to a Lexington, Kentucky, reporter in 1992. “But it’s the comeliness of the image that we cultivate.” “I’m not advocating a return to ‘the good old days’ of some mythic past,” he said. “For most people, they were never all that good to begin with.” The welcome table ideal was realizable, John said, but he never promised it would come easy. I have looked askance at the gentrification aspects of the Southern Foodways Alliance from time to time, but I've come to think that, like many things about being Southern, it's just complicated. And mostly better than not. Obviously, the same could be said about John Egerton. May The Sauce Be With You.
