(Not) A Short Life Of Trouble

(Not) A Short Life Of Trouble “I just started thinkin’ about the short life of trouble,” “Bob” says, of the period he spent recuperating. “How short life is. I’d just lay there listenin’ to the birds chirping. Kids playing in the neighbor’s yard or rain falling by the window. I realized how much I’d missed. Then I’d hear the fire engine roar, and I could feel the steady thrust of death that had been constantly looking over its shoulder at me.” https://longandwastedyear.com/2014/06/29/short-life-of-trouble/ Originally shared by lynn paden The great thing for me, now, is that writing has become more and more interesting. Not just as a craft but as a way into things that are not described. It's a thing of discovering. That's when writing is really working. Taste Of The Tattoo Brew

Taste Of The Tattoo Brew Behind the scenes with the Edinborough Tattoo lighting crew. Ironically enough, the term "tattoo" derives from a 17th-century Dutch phrase doe den tap toe ("turn off the tap") a signal to tavern owners each night, played by a regiment's Corps of Drums, to turn off the taps of their ale kegs so that the soldiers would retire to their billeted lodgings at a reasonable hour. With the establishment of modern barracks and full military bands later in the 18th century, the term "tattoo" was used to describe the last duty call of the day, as well as a ceremonial form of evening entertainment performed by military musicians. Banners held aloft sound slogans like “Thou Shalt Not Kill” and “Your Hands Are Full of Blood,” while at the front, a line of drummers provides the only cadence, aside from the rhythm of walking feet. Better Than Biscuits

Image
Better Than Biscuits The new pastor of a small southern church was attending a men’s prayer breakfast. The pastor called on one of the older men to say the prayer that morning. The man stood up, bowed his head, and said, “Lord, I hate buttermilk.” The pastor opened one eye and wondered where this was going. The man continued, "Lord, I hate lard." Now the pastor was getting worried. Then the man said, “And Lord, you know I don’t care much for raw flour.” The pastor was about to stop everything, when the man continued, “But Lord, when you mix ‘em all together and bakes ‘em up, I do love me some fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up we don’t like, when life gets hard, when we just don’t understand what you are saying to us, we just need to relax and wait ‘til You are done fixin’ and probably it will be something even better than biscuits.”

The Greatest Tarocco Game In The World

The Greatest Tarocco Game In The World He had seen these tarots several times in Scott’s possession since he had come to Edinburgh. They were gruesome, Gothic, and graced with a kind of lithless malevolence all their own. The four suits were commonplace enough: the artist had reserved his fantastic brushes for the figured cards. The Bateleur, the Empress, the Pope, l’Amoureux and le Pendu, Death and Fortitude, the Traitor, the Last Judgment itself, all shared a grotesque camaraderie of the paintpot. They waited as the pages flicked over. He went through them all, folded the papers and handed them with an inaudible remark to the Englishman, Frank, who was nearest. Then he returned to the table. “You want these papers?” “Yes,” said Scott shortly. “It’s a matter of life and death.” “Jesus. Whose life? A Scotsman’s?” “… Yes.” Palmer grinned more widely. “That’s all right: I’m not the vindictive sort. Sine lucro friget ludus, eh? You want this, you say. Then play me for it.” “I’m offering y...

Big Empty Box

Big Empty Box I can remember when the Walmart was built in Bluefield, about 1992. I thought it was ridonkulous, but I was obviously on the wrong side of history. Mostly. Welch isn't, wasn't, Bluefield. It's hard to imagine the optimism, or cluelessness, that saw Welch on an upward track of profitability for Walmart. Back in the day, Sears strove for a similar ubiquity, with the less profitable stores helping to support the catalog business. Walmart apparently doesn't see the value in that. I also know the story of how Walmart came to Oriental, NC. That story, while having some predictably bad results for some pre-existing stores, turned out pretty well for the residents of Oriental. When Walmart decided to bail, the brand new facility got turned into a fancy Piggly Wiggly. Like a lot of big things, Walmart has created its own weather, but that is often not quite enough to satisfy its own insatiable needs for growth. And the tsunami caused by their jumping in the loc...

"SAN FRANCISCO — In what one aviation expert called a near-miss of what could have been the largest aviation disaster ever, an Air Canada pilot on Friday narrowly avoided a tragic mistake: landing on the San Francisco International Airport taxiway instead of the appropriate runway. Sitting on Taxiway C shortly before midnight were four fully-loaded airplanes full of passengers and gas awaiting permission to take-off, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the “rare” incident. An air traffic controller sent the Air Canada Airbus 320 on a “go-around” — an unusual event where pilots must pull-up and circle around to try again — before landing safely, according to the federal agency....

The Violence Inherent In The System

Image
The Violence Inherent In The System DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. ARTHUR: Be quiet! DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you! ARTHUR: Shut up! DENNIS: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an empereror just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd put me away! ARTHUR: Shut up! Will you shut up! DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system. ARTHUR: Shut up! DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed! ARTHUR: Bloody peasant! DENNIS: Oh, what a give away. Did you here that, did you here that, eh? That's what I'm on about -- did you see him repressing me, you saw it didn't you? via Cara Evangelista Originally shared by Marc

Made Me A Sammich

Image
Made Me A Sammich Our skipper, Mr. Personality, keeps his crew because his sweet and lovely wife feeds us from her kitchen. The theory is similar to the story about the child so ugly, someone had to tie a pork chop around your neck just to get the dog to play with you. That, and the fact that he puts up with us , and that together, we win more races than we lose. He's pretty generous with the top shelf grog, too. No races today, because not enough wind.

Whither Teela Brown?

Image
Whither Teela Brown? via George Station Originally shared by David Amerland Consequences When we look at the world, each of us, has a deep, almost intuitive understanding of the fact that nothing happens without a reason ( https://goo.gl/qkM6hi ). That allows us to sense that there is no real random factor in the universe ( https://goo.gl/8cx3E5 ). This seemingly simple notion has deep personal, philosophical and scientific impact. If the universe is not random ( https://goo.gl/8cx3E5 ) then chance plays no role in it. Everything has a cause and everything is intentional which might even mean (some hope) that the universe has a design upon us ( https://goo.gl/oFy8bW ) and that everything has meaning. Yet randomness, as an effect (and at times a cause) seems to be baked-in: https://goo.gl/jpm2ft . If randomness truly exists, goes the argument, then chance is universal, our best-laid plans are capable of being overturned by truly unpredictable factors and life is a sequence of steps that...

Following Seas

Image
Following Seas Stern wave on the final downwind leg, at just about hull speed. Pushing a lot of water. Took a third and a first. About everything that could go wrong, did, on the first race. Took four tacks to clear the line on the start, when one of the high dollar Tylaska shackles on the genoa released unexpectedly. Whee. Hard to win a race when that happens. Wind was pretty fresh, so we all had to work pretty hard today. Didn't use to be so hard, when we were younger. Still, didn't break anything. Headed out for tacos and Cruzan Blackstrap.

Jump (Jet) Start

Jump (Jet) Start The morning began with the Sound Of Freedom (by Rolls Royce) above, and biting Black Flies below. Must be Hancock Creek. I brought a Jump Box to power a 12V fan for the comfort of whatever sod ending up packing the spinnaker in 120° heat. Ended up having to use it to get the diesel started. Might have to race without shipboard electronicals today. Might end up head down in the engine compartment later today. Joy, joy. At least there appears to be enough wind to race some before the inevitable thunderstorms.

Spiraling Down The Well

Spiraling Down The Well Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh Sigh...the end is coming. But what a spectacular end to the Cassini Mission. "[Emily Lakdawalla] It's been hard to bring myself to write the following sentence: the Cassini mission ends soon. We're halfway through the "Grand Finale" orbits. Only eleven and a half orbits remain until Cassini meets its fate on September 15. JPL is planning a big press event for the final days of the mission. [...] Right now the mission is in an orbit that circles Saturn about every six and a half days. That is a very short orbit for Cassini. It reminds me of one of those coin-funnel "wishing well" devices, where the coins circle faster and faster as they approach the drain. Cassini is now the one circling the drain. [...] Most of the science during this period focuses on small-scale structure in Saturn's rings, and detailed features in Saturn's polar aurorae. There is one remaining gravity science orbit, w...
