Big Empty Box
Big Empty Box
I can remember when the Walmart was built in Bluefield, about 1992.
I thought it was ridonkulous, but I was obviously on the wrong side of history.
Mostly.
Welch isn't, wasn't, Bluefield. It's hard to imagine the optimism, or cluelessness, that saw Welch on an upward track of profitability for Walmart.
Back in the day, Sears strove for a similar ubiquity, with the less profitable stores helping to support the catalog business. Walmart apparently doesn't see the value in that.
I also know the story of how Walmart came to Oriental, NC. That story, while having some predictably bad results for some pre-existing stores, turned out pretty well for the residents of Oriental. When Walmart decided to bail, the brand new facility got turned into a fancy Piggly Wiggly.
Like a lot of big things, Walmart has created its own weather, but that is often not quite enough to satisfy its own insatiable needs for growth.
And the tsunami caused by their jumping in the local pool, and the ring of destruction and lowered water level on departure are for others to worry about.
