On 21 July 1967 English actor Basil Rathbone died of a heart attack at the age of 75 in New York. Rathbone served as an intelligence officer in WWI, was a member of the New Shakespeare company in 1919, and began appearing in film in 1921. Appearing in a range of roles through his career, he is remembered for his swashbucklers and detectives. Notable performances included "Captain Blood" (35), "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (38), "Tower of London" (39), "The Mark of Zorro" (40), "The Court Jester" (56), and the 14-film Sherlock Holmes series and radio plays during WWII. With his distinctive voice Rathbone also had a career as a spoken word recording artist, mostly reading Dickens and Poe stories, and providing narration for productions like "Peter and the Wolf".
In the 1960s he toured with a one-man show, reciting poetry and Shakespeare, and reminiscing upon his career ("I could have killed Errol Flynn any time I wanted to!").
