Steely Dan-The Mooncoin Jig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-mix36SjZY Originally shared by Dirk Puehl 31 October - #onthisday Hallowe’en is celebrated by now all across the world on the traditional date of Samhain or All Hallows’ Eve. A long time ago, when bronze working was a state-of-the-art skill, smiths were regarded as some kind of magicians, those who were able to craft two different metals from the womb of the earth into something new, more than the sum of its parts and cast wonderful tools and weapons from it. Smithies remained enchanted places, conveniently close to the magic crossroads, often with a gateway to the Otherworld and the idea of the uncanny smith remained in the collective consciousness of the people. And thus, it was a smith called Jack Oldfield, once upon a time in Ireland, who struck a deal with the devil. When o...

Security Through Obscurity

Security Through Obscurity Originally shared by Andreas Schou There's a very real sense in which the Clinton email issue is just a giant shit-fight between DOJ/DOD and State coming to a head. Both have reasonable points: State's computer security practices are abysmal, but State couldn't do any diplomatic work whatsoever if it ran its classification practices the way DOD/DOJ wants it to. Here's what's going on: Every executive agency has the right to set its own classification practices, and the classification chain for every executive agency ends with either the civilian head of that agency or some other agency. But because classification policies vary so widely between different executive agencies, there's often internecine disagreement when information classified by one agency (say, Defense) is later handled by another agency (say, State). And these disputes tend to center very heavily on State, as opposed to every other agency. Fights about classification be...

Betting The Over/Under On Uber

Betting The Over/Under On Uber I'm a pretty big believer in bad behavior being a future predictor of additional bad behavior, and when it comes to entrepreneurial endeavors, I find I'm often right. Uber has certainly been guilty of bad behavior, and doesn't seem to care much. Lots of the current waves of disruptive innovation are fueled by the optimism and excessive liquidity of the markets. It isn't clear whether they will be sustainable at all, much less in ways that will consistently benefit laborers or consumers. "When I asked Marco why he was so sure that Juno would still be around, he said, half jokingly, that he had acquired all the wisdom he needed by reading “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” by Douglas Adams. “Oh, my God,” he said. “It’s the Bible. Everything is there.” In the novel, the main character reflects at one point that the earth was pretty much ruined by all the cars. His name is Arthur Dent. One of his non-terrestrial sidekicks calls hims...

Muse

Muse I was saddened to discover that Joan Parker died shortly after the interview in my previous post. It was she who encouraged him to get a doctorate so he could teach at the college level, and she who offered a characteristically profane benediction when he finished the manuscript of his first Spenser novel: “ ‘Holy [expletive],’ I said to him, ‘this is like a real book,’ ” she recalled in 1981. For many fans, Mrs. Parker and her husband were inseparable from Silverman and Spenser. At times, the assumption could get irritating. “There are four of us now,” she told the Globe in 1981, “me and Ace and Spenser and Susan. She is a person in my life. I am trying to separate from her. Spenser and Susan are a composite of both he and I. But in terms of real life, we are very far away from Susan and Spenser. I like her OK, but what I dislike is the assumption that Susan and I are the same person. Sure, there are some similarities. The repartee, back and forth, between Susan and Spenser is li...

Happoshu For Hire

Image
Happoshu For Hire I remember reading Robert B. Parker’s Godwulf Manuscript, the debut novel of his long running series of Spenser (with an s, like the poet) crime novels. I’m not sure you could call them detective stories, although Spenser did have a P.I. license. Spenser’s M.O. was mostly to position himself as a tough guy in the way of trouble, and see what shook itself out in the resultant melées. Kind of similar to John D. MacDonald’s Travis McGee, who still had a few stories to tell, at that time. I was favorably impressed by the new guy. Wasn’t as impressed by the television show, but it had its moments. Avery Brooks did a fine turn as Hawk, I thought. Spenser aged pretty gracefully over the years, and I guess I assumed that Parker would keep cranking out adventures indefinitely. I was disappointed when he left us in 2010, and resigned myself to maybe seeing a few more works in progress get finished, and then going without. When I was browsing at the library the other day, ...

Half A League, Half A League...

Half A League, Half A League... Originally shared by Dirk Puehl 25 October 1854, #onthisday the Charge of the Light Brigade was ordered during the Battle of Balaclava near Sevastopol. It was as if the whole chain of command was competing to win Monty Python’s “Upper Class Twit of the Year” award. Admittedly, the prize should have been given to Field Marshal FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, GCB PC, without much ado anyway. Lord Raglan, then 65, had last seen action at Waterloo 40 years before and was one of the most inept commanders in military history. At the height of the Battle of Balaclava now, after issuing a series of hare-brained commands, he saw an artillery position of his Turkish allies taken by the Russians on the Fedioukine Heights and ordered “…the cavalry to advance rapidly to the front, follow the enemy, and try to prevent the enemy carrying away the guns. Troop horse artillery may accompany. French cavalry is on your left. Immediate." General Lord Air...

We Are One In The Spirit

We Are One In The Spirit Except for when we aren't... There were some hecklers at the Pride parade yesterday, who got a little extra excited at the idea of a local Baptist church "strengthening the Hand of Evil" by supporting LGBTQ folks. Heh. The good news is that they were so few in numbers, they needed a megaphone to get the word out... They had a second contingent towards the end of the parade, where things usually wind down a bit. Our Faithful Leader started singing the chorus to this song, "They'll Know We Are Christians, By Our Love, By Our Love..." Crowd went wild. It was a nice moment. Wasn't nothing mean about it, just a simple refutation of hate. Love is hard, sometimes, but always worth the effort of trying. Peter Scholtes wrote this hymn while he was a parish priest at St. Brendan's on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s. At the time, he was leading a youth choir out of the church basement and was looking for an appropriate song...

The End Of The Oath Breaker

The End Of The Oath Breaker And, of course, the ruination of the Englishness of England by those bloody Normans, causing endless distress to Tolkien and others... Originally shared by Dirk Puehl 14 October 1066, #onthisday 950 years ago, Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, fell at the Battle of Hastings. The situation in England before the conquest was, in fact, a chaos and, ironically enough, it was the Dane Cnut the Great who gave the island the resemblance of political order when it became part of his North Sea Empire in 1016. After his death 20 years later, the confusion went off properly again. Traditionally, the King of England was appointed by the Witangemot, a council of noble advisors, rather than by birthright alone, since the days of Athelstan, when old Wessex essentially became the Kingdom in 927. If Edward the Confessor, one of Cnut’s successors on the throne of England, had promised kingship after his death to Earl Harold of Wessex or William the Bas...

The Root Beer Man

Image
The Root Beer Man "Satch" Paige was a fixture on RAGBRAI for several decades, driving a brown, beat up Chevrolet Step Van emblazoned with Iowa Double Dog and Draft Root Beer on the side. Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago. I never had an Iowa Double Dog. I had more than a few Draft Root Beers. Might have been the magic of RAGBRAI (heat, hail, pestilence, and amusing but frequently bad behavior) but it was the best Root Beer ever. Bar none. 1919 Root Beer, which you can't get around these parts. https://www.1919rootbeer.com/availability/

The Romance Of Root Beer

The Romance Of Root Beer Much as it pains me, I have to admit that there is one thing that Yankees do better than Southerners. Root Beer. There. I said it. I hear tell that Grant and Gail Simons have been selling Root Beer in their 1937 one and half ton Ford Truck for almost fifty years now. Grant and Gail Simons hail from upper New York State, but like a lot of Yankees, they moved to warmer climes, which is where I first met them, at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, sometime in the 1980's. They're good people, selling a great product with style, Richardson Root Beer, made in Rochester. I never miss a chance to see them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bLzQIrRAEI

Dat Frosty Mug Taste

Image
Dat Frosty Mug Taste Of course, nobody can really agree on what root beer tastes like. I was probably first exposed to the stuff in an A&W diner somewhere, and I was an instant fan. I still drink it, even though they've outlawed the key ingredients in my lifetime. Unfortunately, the waning popularity of traditional drive ins is unlikely to spur a re-examination of the clinical evidence at this point, and I'm too lazy to make my own. Yet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3ARoot_beer

The Right Way

The Right Way via John Bump Originally shared by Andres Soolo For decades now in the Netherlands drivers have been trained (and tested for their licenses) on a behavior that dramatically reduces the risk of doorings. They do not even have a name for it because it is simply how one opens a car door. Basically, instead of using their door-side (left) arm, they reach over with their other (right) arm. This simple behavioral shift causes drivers to look back naturally and see whether or not there are oncoming bicyclists. #trafficjudo , obviously. And #cycling . http://99percentinvisible.org/article/dutch-reach-clever-workaround-keep-cyclists-getting-doored
