We Are One In The Spirit

We Are One In The Spirit

Except for when we aren't...

There were some hecklers at the Pride parade yesterday, who got a little extra excited at the idea of a local Baptist church "strengthening the Hand of Evil" by supporting LGBTQ folks. Heh. The good news is that they were so few in numbers, they needed a megaphone to get the word out...

They had a second contingent towards the end of the parade, where things usually wind down a bit. Our Faithful Leader started singing the chorus to this song, "They'll Know We Are Christians, By Our Love, By Our Love..."

Crowd went wild. It was a nice moment. Wasn't nothing mean about it, just a simple refutation of hate. Love is hard, sometimes, but always worth the effort of trying.

Peter Scholtes wrote this hymn while he was a parish priest at St. Brendan's on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s. At the time, he was leading a youth choir out of the church basement and was looking for an appropriate song for a series of ecumenical, interracial events. When he couldn't find such a song, he wrote the now-famous hymn in a single day. His experiences at St. Brendan's, and in the Chicago Civil Rights movement, influenced him for the rest of his life.

"We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
We will work with each other, we will work side by side,
And we'll guard each one's dignity and save each one's pride
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love."
