Entremet Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh "“Like most people in the US, I grew up knowing the words to this carol and even (shudder) singing them occasionally (singing is not a strong point of mine), but never really thought about what they meant, how the carol originated, or what birds were involved”, says Dr Rasmussen in email. So she decided to figure it out. Dr Rasmussen, who’s tied for third for the most bird discoveries in the world, is probably also the world’s foremost avian sleuth, due to her meticulous detective work a few years ago that uncovered the many ornithological thefts and records frauds in museums that were committed by eminent British ornithologist, Richard Meinertzhagen. But who would ever have thought that an old Christmas carol might also hold an avian mystery? “After all, it’s just a Christmas carol!” Dr Rasmussen points out." https://medium.com/@GrrlScientist/meet-the-real-birds-of-the-twelve-days-of-christmas-fame-grrlscientist-5a8bc09350c9
I've been obsessed with this album for the past four decades, but even then I'm not sure I'd say it was definitely the Who's best album. Other than that, nothing to disagree with in this article.
ReplyDeleteThat new mix, though. Who fans have been driven to despair by Townshend's insistence on turning over the Who catalog to his former brother-in-law, who carelessly messes with songs, adding things that weren't in the original and taking other things out. (For example replacing guitar solos with wildly different takes or in some cases accidentally leaving them out altogether.) Add to that slathering on copious amounts of compression and noise reduction, making the new versions harder to listen to than the vinyl originals. I hope someday those albums can be re-remastered so they sound like the real thing.
Yeah, best is slippery. Best for what?
ReplyDeleteBut it is definitely one concept album that has stood the test of time for me, for its depth, artistry, and passion.
Remixing is dangerous after hearing damage from decades of live rock n roll. Still, I woukd have asked Glyn.
ReplyDeleteone of my all-time faves. great article. i just introduced a coworker to disc one on wednesday, somewhere on the roads between cheyenne and denver. the who were my first favorite band, and i saw quadrophenia with my junior high buddies at age 12 or so at the local art house theater in my little st louis suburb. i had this album playing on my walkman as i rode the channel ferry towards england at age fifteen. a personal soundtrack for decades.
