The Great Gargoo Is Gone

The Great Gargoo Is Gone http://file770.com/?p=42443 "Did y’ever hear the one about the old man and the sea? Halt a minute, lordling; stop and listen. It’s a fine story, full of balance and point and social pith; short and direct. It’s not mine. Mine are long and rambling and parenthetical and they corrode the moral fiber right out of a man. Come to think, I won’t tell you that one after all. A man of my age has a right to prefer his own material, and let the critics be damned. I’ve a prejudice now for webs of my own weaving." "Sit down, sit down: but against pavement, yes; it’s been done before. Everything has, near about. Now that’s not an expression of your black pessimism, or your futility, or what have you. Pessimism’s just the commonsense knowledge that there’s more ways for something to go wrong than for it to go right, from our point of view anyway—which is not necessarily that of the management, or of the mechanism, if you prefer your cosmos depersonalized. The New Poor People's Campaign: Week 3

Image
The New Poor People's Campaign: Week 3 More protests and non-violent direct actions at our Nation's Capitol, and at all State Capitols. We sent another crew to Raleigh this morning. How about you? We need a strong, professional military. But we don't need to be constantly embroiled in pointless wars simply to keep the military-industrial complex happy. And we don't need to confuse the roles of the military and police, especially in terms of equipment. Nor do we need to raise a Nation on the idea that conflict is always best resolved with more, bigger guns.

Strict Liability

Strict Liability "Strict Liability" is a legal doctrine that is older than Common Law. You'll notice, of course, that it is never mentioned with regards to the actions of Governments. In a case closer to home, someone is being charged with murder after running through a checkpoint and fleeing. One of the troopers following him died in a single vehicle accident. The perpetrator fled to avoid being charged with driving with a revoked license. https://www.wral.com/man-arrested-after-trooper-dies-in-chase-in-yadkin-county/17573949/ http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-swatting-kansas-federal-charges-20180523-story.html

A Check On Progress

A Check On Progress I'm beginning to think that one of the primary tasks ahead of us is to eliminate the idea of Sovereign Immunity, especially in areas where Law Enforcement is concerned. Layers Of History

Layers Of History Almost every year, I hear tell of another story about the origins of Memorial Day. Mostly, I've always heard about its roots in Decoration Day, and Dinner On The Ground (in the cemetery). That is a fairly old Appalachian tradition, still practiced today, and wasn't directly associated with remembrance of war dead. It was a time to assemble at the graveyard, spruce things up, and decorate the graves with flowers. And then to eat there, in the cemetery. Appalachian cemeteries weren't always just for one church, or any church, so it was more of a community thing. One thing for sure, you didn't leave a Dinner On The Ground hungry, and there would be Stack Cake to eat. A lot of variations in that, too, but mostly I recall it being thin buttermilk layer cakes, sweetened with sorghum or molasses (almost like pancakes, more like gingerbread cookies) with ginger spiced apple sauce/apple butter in between the layers, and being set aside for at least a coupl...

*ICE ICE Baby*

*ICE ICE Baby* Johnston admitted to officers that he pretended to be an ICE agent because his “ex-wife had insulted him in front of his daughter and told his daughter that he had done nothing with his life,” according to court records. He had decided to masquerade as an ICE agent because “nobody knew who ICE was and he did not want to pick a local agency where people might know individuals who worked at the agency, because he feared being caught,” according to court records. After obtaining a warrant, federal and local law enforcement officials on Oct. 23 searched Johnston’s home and discovered 32 firearms — including shotguns, rifles, pistols and revolvers — large amounts of ammunition, cannon fuses, pipes, homemade rockets and other destructive accessories, court records show. Getting Real

Getting Real "A little bit of real people doesn’t hurt. A little bit of real life doesn’t hurt. Be on your knees, scrape some dirt. Love the other. Try to dig people. Whether you have God or not, God told you to focus on life on earth, and if you do, there’s a place for you in heaven. This is longstanding wisdom from our elders. Take this as wisdom. Take it.” I've got Carhartts, too. Wash them at least once a week, and retire them when the ass rips out. I've got standards. Preach!

Preach! There is a lot of evil in this world, always has been. Some of it seems bigger and closer than it used to. Evil needs to be identified, confronted. But not Feared. Because there is no Redemption through Fear. And Redemption is the goal. Not necessarily the Redemption of Religion, either. But the Redemption of Love. "[French Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de] Chardin said that fire was one of the greatest discoveries in all of human history. And he then went on to say that if humanity every harnesses the energy of fire again, if humanity ever captures the energy of love, it will be the second time in history that we have discovered fire." "Dr. King was right, we must discover love. The redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world." A Sea Of Red

A Sea Of Red 15,000 people are converging on the State Capitol this morning, to protest the plight of teachers in North Carolina. Teachers are not allowed to unionize in NC (or strike or walkout), but the teachers are allowed to take leave, and have done so to the extent that many school districts have been forced to close. There are troublesome things about this, though. Many of their demands involve bringing the money up to the "national average". Does everybody get to do that? Will doing that magically fix notable problems? I noted that the Poor People's Campaign event yesterday, with its focus on women's issues, didn't address the plight of teachers (who are still predominantly female). Nor have I seen efforts by the NCAE to fill in the gap for childcare caused by the closings, although other organizations are making efforts. I'm hopeful to see folks agitating for change. I'm worried that they don't seem to be working together. https://www.wra...

Left A Mark

Left A Mark There was a time in New York City when, if you wanted to get inked, you had to know a guy. Tattooing was banned by the city's Health Department in 1961. The ban lasted until 1997. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/04/obituaries/thom-devita-85-dies-revolutionized-the-art-of-tattooing.html If a customer asked for a simple black panther, Thom DeVita might add bright red scratch marks around the claws, or embellish an image of a rose with dark radiating spider webs. His tattoos were bold, stylishly crude, abstract. They are often replicated by tattoo artists today. When asked in a 2012 documentary if it was his designs that drew his customers in, he was blunt. “No,” he said, “I was known for $30 tattoos. I was doing blue-collar workers, and guys who didn’t work.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l1mqYQuNf8

Shooting Blanks “In this generation everybody’s fascinated with guns,” said Jarret McClain, a paintballer in Durham, North Carolina. “But if you got paintball guns and you know nobody can get hurt and it won’t cause nobody’s family to cry, at the end of the day it becomes fun shooting at people.” McClain credits the Atlanta rapper 21 Savage with sparking the recent wave of interest in paintball after he posted a number of videos to social media in early April calling for “guns down, paintballs up” as an alternative to gun violence. McClain said it’s been effective too, and that his crew had already settled three separate vendettas with other groups through paintball. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/05/savage-21-paintball-wars-trend-gun-violence These folks are obviously not History Majors: Codes duello regulate dueling and thus help prevent vendettas between families and other social factions. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_duello via Cara Evangelista https://www.t...

Skylark Smith Born #onthisday in 1890. Father of Space Opera, battling Evil throughout the Universe, starting with "Blackie" DuQuesne, and going on to Helmuth "speaking for Boskone." Can't really have a good space battle without "violet lambent beams of unimaginable force rending the very fabric of spacetime."

Competency Testing

Competency Testing Competency is High Religion in my Tribe, at least partly because Real Actual Physical Danger and Lasting Solutions to Meaningful Problems require Competency. Plus, Experting is Fun! But Leadership, especially Good Leadership, is hard to quantify, hard to identify , especially in its nascent stages. In some ways, I think our current struggles are about the difficulties of Managing to Scale. Our modern society is quite large, complex, and interdependent. Mucking about with sabots, either as an expert, or as an eejit, is Dangerous. However, there are consequences with the Persistence of Things As They Always Were. Our current Eejit In Chief, on the surface, has laudable goals, making America great, draining the swamp, etc. The problem? Trying to implement those goals without competency breaks things and hurts people. The damage is compounded when your insincerity is exposed, and it becomes clear that you are trying to help your friends, and screw everybody else. ...

A Thrall No Longer

A Thrall No Longer It's always entertaining, when the Privileged become Enlightened, and the Revolutionaries Sell Out. I'm still fonder of the latter, because it is a relatively painless way of effecting Reparations. The problem is, too many of the "Revolutionaries" don't actually come from the marginalized peoples. The ones that do, don't often live long enough to get any reward. Originally shared by **** McCain writes that this will be his last term in the Senate, a fact he said a brain cancer diagnosis forced him to admit last year. “I’m freer than colleagues who will face the voters again. I can speak my mind without fearing the consequences much. And I can vote my conscience without worry,” McCain writes. http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/385540-mccain-torches-trump-in-new-book-he-places-the-appearance-of-toughness-over?rnd=1525117407 Via https://twitter.com/thehill/status/991297466472509440?s=19
