The Roar Of The Waves

The Roar Of The Waves
Frederick Douglass: “Those who want freedom without struggle are like those who want rain without the thunder and lightening, who want the ocean without the roar of the waves.”
Week 2 of the New Poor People's Campaign!

On Monday, May 21 in front of the North Carolina Legislative Building, a group of activists will gather to bear witness to our indecent immigration policy. We’ll bear witness to the anti-immigrant rhetoric from our politicians, to the fear running rampant in immigrant communities, to the horrible conditions in for-profit detention centers, and to the thousands of families who are being torn apart by anti-immigration enforcement.
We'll be in the crowd because people came to this nation, like our ancestors came, to have a better life: free of autocratic rulers, free of poverty, and free of violence.
We'll be in the crowd because our immigrant friends are afraid. Whether citizen, married to a citizen, awaiting asylum, or even a DACA recipient, if you are “not from here,” you are vulnerable to detention and deportation.
In the years following the attacks of 9/11 and amid fears of economic insecurity, we have been led to believe that immigrants make our society and communities less safe, threaten our culture and democracy, and compete for our jobs and resources.
However, undocumented migrants contribute far more to our economy than they receive. They have paid many billions into Social Security and federal taxes. They pay eight percent of their income in state and local taxes, while the wealthiest one percent pay just 5.4 percent. Many of these immigrants fled truly horrendous conditions of poverty and oppression in their home countries.
Conditions that we, as a first world power, had more than a little involvement in creating.
It's true that we do not live in a world with open borders. But it is also true that our immigration system is badly broken, and fails to treat prospective citizens with due process and respect. Not to mention that current enforcement policies put even documented citizens at risk, if they don't look white enough.
The plight of immigrants should not be used as cover for the continuing overall assault on ALL of our lives, rights, and living conditions.
We'll be demanding a clear and just immigration system, and an end to fear.
