This is from historian Heather Cox Richardson, a professor at Boston College: I don't like to talk about politics on Facebook-- political history is my job, after all, and you are my friends-- but there is an important non-partisan point to make today. What Bannon is doing, most dramatically with last night's ban on immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries-- is creating what is known as a "shock event." Such an event is unexpected and confusing and throws a society into chaos. People scramble to react to the event, usually along some fault line that those responsible for the event can widen by claiming that they alone know how to restore order. When opponents speak out, the authors of the shock event call them enemies. As society reels and tempers run high, those responsible for the shock event perform a sleight of hand to achieve their real goal, a goal they know to be hugely unpopular...

Class migrants (white-collar professionals born to blue-collar families) report that “professional people were generally suspect” and that managers are college kids “who don’t know shit about how to do anything but are full of ideas about how I have to do my job,” said Alfred Lubrano in Limbo. Barbara Ehrenreich recalled in 1990 that her blue-collar dad “could not say the word doctor without the virtual prefix quack. Lawyers were shysters…and professors were without exception phonies.” Annette Lareau found tremendous resentment against teachers, who were perceived as condescending and unhelpful. Michèle Lamont, in The Dignity of Working Men, also found resentment of professionals — but not of the rich. “[I] can’t knock anyone for succeeding,” a laborer told her. “There’s a lot of people out there who are wealthy and I’m sure they worke...

Patriotism

Patriotism “Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. It wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, "the greatest", but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is.” Sydney J. Harris

His regular flight had been cancelled and he’d been forced to hop a twin-engine puddle-jumper. A volatile storm system had parked itself over the continental divide, a two-mile high Rocky Mountain Ridge bisecting the state on a North/South axis. The pilots were disinclined to make the trip, especially since my father was the only passenger in their 8-seater. Dad, a former British Army Major and paratrooper, was not easily denied. The three of them ascended. It wasn’t long before the pilot and co-pilot regretted their decision. With only mountains below them, and no available place to land, they pressed on into an increasingly violent, turbulent storm – swimming in rain-whipped blackness, tossed about by sudden shifts of wind and terrified as lightning strik...

Forty Words For Fear

Forty Words For Fear In a review of Madison Smartt Bell's novel, "Anything Goes", Mark Lindquist wrote this: "Elvis Costello once said that writing about music is like “dancing about architecture, it’s a really stupid thing to want to do.” With “Anything Goes,” Madison Smartt Bell joins the ranks of Salman Rushdie and Don DeLillo — accomplished authors who’ve written rock ‘n’ roll novels that seem like a really stupid thing to want to do." If you don't know who Madison Smartt Bell is, well, you're lucky. He's written a lot, and it's quite good. What you might not know is that he is a musician. Of sorts. He cut a demo of some songs that came out of Anything Goes, and put it on his website. Scott Beal got the demo tape from Bell, and sent it on to Don Dixon, best known for producing REM's first records, along with Mitch Easter. Dixon right away agreed with Beal that the music--featuring Bell on guitar--was intriguing. The only trouble was, ...

Basket Case Old things sometimes possess amazing transformative powers. A slight touch can act as effectively as an Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator to make core structures cease to exist. I should have known better than to attempt to eliminate a relatively small, pesky drip under the kitchen sink on a day when all the hardware stores were closed, due to the SNOWPOCALYPSE. But… Examination revealed that the pot metal slip nut on the sink strainer basket was both cracked, and corrosively welded to the basket. The leak was due to water leaking through this failing joint. Merely examining this caused both the nut and the basket to reach a state of utter uselessness with remarkable rapidity. Didn’t even have to wave a power tool in its general direction. Fortunately, I happened to have a high dollar Kohler strainer basket in inventory, a costly reminder of the fickleness of a certain remodel client some years back. The next question would be whether the old basket could be remov...

Because Nvidia Drivers Never Crash Except for when they do. Over and over and over... Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh "Jen-Hsun Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, said last night in Las Vegas that his company and Audi are developing a self-driving car that will finally be worthy of the name. That autonomous vehicle, he said, will be on the roads by 2020. Huang made his remarks in a keynote address at CES. Then he was joined by Scott Keough, the head of Audi of America, who emphasized that the car really would drive itself. “We’re talking highly automated cars, operating in numerous conditions, in 2020,” Keough said. A prototype based on Audi’s Q7 car was, as he spoke, driving itself around the lot beside the convention center, he added. This implies the Audi-Nvidia car will have “Level 4” capability, needing no human being to supervise it or take the wheel on short notice, at least not under “numerous” road conditions. So, maybe it won’t do cross-country moose chases in snowy climes....

With A Plot Twist At The End

With A Plot Twist At The End Last chance: Could you make it baby if you only had one more one Fast break: You think the world is waiting while you're gettin' your bikini done Screen pass: Like a blind side tackle boiling up from way behind Cheap shot: You can feel it coming but you know it's gonna blow your mind So you rock so - and you skank so - Well if you think so - why not say so Trash talk: Now you tell your girlies that it's nothin' but a burnout buzz Chump change: When you pick up the pieces you don't even know what it was Goose chase: A little runaround action just to keep the background pure Jump cut: To the grim conclusion that you never can tell for sure Well it's the god's eye view Better take a long hard look You're gonna have me right now Like it says in the book It's the god's eye view Baby it's the queen and rook Chasing one lonely pawn No it wouldn't take long Safe house: Just a simulation of the mommy-and-daddy groo...

Gopher

Gopher The committee meeting where the team first presented the Gopher protocol was a disaster, “literally the worst meeting I’ve ever seen,” says Alberti. “I still remember a woman in pumps jumping up and down and shouting, ‘You can’t do that!’ ” Among the team's offenses: Gopher didn’t use a mainframe computer (it used a a Mac SE/30) and its server-client setup empowered anyone with a PC, not a central authority. While it did everything required and then some, to the committee it felt like a middle finger. “You’re not supposed to have written this!” Alberti says of the group’s reaction. “This is some lark, never do this again!” The Gopher team was forbidden from further work on the protocol. “Everyone would answer phones at least one day a week,” Lindner says, “even if you were programming. That way you were close to the pain you were inflicting on people — if programmers today still took calls, we’d have more user-friendly software.” Originally shared by Damn interesting https:/...

Sunday Dinner

Image
Sunday Dinner Had folks set to table at the homeplace today. Fed them Hoppin' John, Collard Greens and Cornbread. Nobody complained. One was kind enough to say it was better than his Low Country grandmother used to make. I was right pleased. We offered Spritz Cookies, Cora's Rum Cake, and Mississippi Orange Slice Cake for dessert. Nobody refused. A great start to the New Year with the best of Family and Friends. ¡Salud!
