Needs River Lethe Aperitif

Needs River Lethe Aperitif Originally shared by Semicentenary Project The tortuous "It's a Small World" attraction opened in Fantasyland at Disneyland on May 28, 1966. The river upon which the park guests are transported past over 500 singing dolls is 1,400 feet long. The song heard in the attraction (for almost 15 long minutes) was written by Robert and Richard Sherman, who as a result, have since been commissioned to write an original soundtrack for the ninth circle of Hell.

Elucidating Your Idea

Elucidating Your Idea "For three bills, you got the works: A thin Jewish brunette would pretend to pick you up at the Museum of Modern Art, let you read her master’s, get you involved in a screaming quarrel at Elaine’s over Freud’s conception of women, and then fake a suicide of your choosing—the perfect evening, for some guys. Ghost In The Machine

Ghost In The Machine Originally shared by Rick Wayne (Author) This is a wonderful, lucid, and short essay on the fundamental flaw of contemporary cognitive science written by a preeminent psychologist. If you follow my rants at all, you know that philosophy of mind, particularly human judgment and decision-making, is a big interest of mine, and that I've said repeatedly, as Mr. Epstein does, that there's a reason 60 years of the computational theory has produced no significant advances. It's bunk, a textbook case of the trap of paradigmatic thinking. Some relevant excerpts: "By the 1500s, automata powered by springs and gears had been devised, eventually inspiring leading thinkers such as René Descartes to assert that humans are complex machines. In the 1600s, the British philosopher Thomas Hobbes suggested that thinking arose from small mechanical motions in the brain. By the 1700s, discoveries about electricity and chemistry led to new theories of human intelligence ...

"Dr Eleanor Raffan, a veterinary surgeon and geneticist who studies how genes influence metabolism at the Institute of Metabolic Science at the University of Cambridge recently published a study that examines the genetics that underlie food motivation and obesity in Labrador retrievers. [...] When Dr Raffan and her team carefully examined this POMC gene variant, they found that a small 14-basepair section a little more than halfway down the gene’s length was missing. This deletion creates a frameshift mutation that results in the production of an abnormal protein where the last half is scrambled into a blob of nonsense [...]. Normally, the POMC is translated into the POMC pro-peptide, which is cleaved at precise sites to give rise to number of smaller peptides, including the appetite suppressing neuropeptides, ß-MSH & ß-endorphin, but the abnormal POMC pro-peptide do...

All That Jaz

Image
All That Jaz The early Dubner CBG systems used 14" Winchester removable platter drives. We were all suitably amazed when the next generation systems started using dinky but durable Bernoulli boxes. So when Iomega started selling their Zip drives for PCs, I was all over that, especially when they made one that would slide into a PowerBook bay. I was equally excited about the Jaz system, and bought an external SCSI version from LaCie just as soon as they were available. Unfortunately, it was not ready for Prime Time. I swapped out several drives and cartridges, but it was constantly jamming and self destructing. The enclosure, however, was really nice, and it got used to house a number of HDs over the years. I think it's about time for all the SCSI gear to go to that great Toxic Waste Dump In The Sky.

All Is Lost

All Is Lost I've watched this several times, now. If you're a sailor, it won't take you very long to make a list of all the mistakes the protagonist makes. They aren't subtle. But folks make bad decisions at sea All The Time. This movie does a pretty damn good job of showing you how it feels to be in the middle of all that, bad decisions and all. What it looks like, what it sounds like. I still grimace at the stoopid, and the unlikely, and the "no, it doesn't work like that." But the feelings? Oh, yes. I get those feelings. Been there, done that. Always happy to get back home. Before I go out, again. http://www.pressherald.com/2013/11/08/maine_sailors_say_lost-at-sea_film_is_worth_its_salt_/ http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2013/10/all-is-lost-review-sailors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no1rl9Gvx-s

Waiting for Baudot

Waiting for Baudot Don't miss all the Baudy Talk on Yonatan Zunger 's repost of this. Tip o' the hat to Noah Friedman , and Chris Stehlik for the puns. Originally shared by Murphy Jacobs I used to live and die by this sound, waiting for my 300 baud to load me into Q-link of a Friday night, and running up my bill. Facial Recognition

Facial Recognition I had to go to (yet another) funeration yesterday, an activity that seems to take up more and more of my time as I get older. The reception after the service was full of people whose faces I recognized, but I could not attach proper names to, also something that seems to happen more and more as I get older. Might pay real money for a HUD app that would provide names and relevant details like a Roman nomenclator. Oh, except for the fallibility of algorithms, and various privacy issues, and how lovely my face would look all scrunched up trying to read the tee ninesy type flashing inside my glasses. Nevermind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ8Xj_I3aNU

"Clouds Mean Death" Chuck Pratt was an outstanding ravist, among many other things. I, too, have spent some time climbing, and raving, but not as well as he did. Except maybe the raving part. Went looking for a letter that Sheridan Anderson wrote to him, many moons ago, and found this, instead. Worth reading every little bit of it, I think. http://www.supertopo.com/a/Chuck-Pratt/a146n.html

The Sweetest Taboo

The Sweetest Taboo I said it before, and I'll say it again. The way to fix this is to have unisex public restrooms. If you can imagine the outcry that would cause, you can understand the issue here, and why the eejit NC Repuglicans are going to get strong support, despite their badly written, last minute, over reaching law. It's all about the fear of breaching taboos, which are never rational. Originally shared by **** "So, is this as stupid as it's going to get, or is it going to get stupider?" Natives of Omaha Nebraska, Astaire and his older sister Adele showed considerable talent as young children, and their parents soon decided to move to New York City to start the pair in show business. It wasn’t long before they had a contract and traveled the country on the Orpheum Circuit of theaters. The siblings performed together until Adele’s marriage in 1932. Disappointing screen tests with RKO led to an uncertain start in movies, but the 1934 partnership with Ginger Rogers in the Gay Divorcee led off a string of successes and over 20 years of dance films. Money Can't Buy It

Money Can't Buy It At least not always, not yet. Funny how disruptive businesses hate any type of regulation, ain't it? Originally shared by M Sinclair Stevens Politics: Austin Citizens Slap Uber and Lyft I wake up completely surprised by this turn of events. We Austin voters have defeated Proposition 1 which let Uber and Lyft write their own rules about regulating themselves. The companies poured millions of dollars into influencing the electorate and, perhaps, in the end the very hard sell was what began to make people suspicious: they are the Walmart of this generation. "It was spending on a scale that had never been seen in Austin politics, as Uber and Lyft singlehandedly funded the pro-Prop 1 campaign group, Ridesharing Works for Austin, to the tune of $8.6 million, campaign finance reports showed. That’s more than seven times the previous record of $1.2 million, which was set by Adler in his 2014 mayoral campaign." “You can elect governors in other states for th...

Clear As Mud I've found the Remix Mini device to be usable, mostly as a Smart TV accessory (Kodi, Netflix, Hulu, PBS). Also using Gmail and Dropbox. But there are a lot of rough edges and functions not working as expected. Henscratches and Flyspecks "I want to persuade the rest of the Weavers that we should send some money to the Irish folk song archives for the song “Kisses Sweeter than Wine.” It’s an old Irish song: [sings]“Mush-a sweeter than thou.” It was a song about a dead cow. This Irish artist sang it to Leadbelly, and Leadbelly started singing it, but he put an African rhythm to it. And along comes Lee Hays and puts words to it, and it’s still being sung after all these decades. I sing it at every wedding I’m at." "You can only laugh if you don’t cry. Trombone

Trombone Studying with three teachers in three years, I was a trombone student in Oklahoma until I was about fifteen years old. Each weekend at one of their houses I'd wait in the kitchen until the trombonist in the basement would yell up at me to come down-- they all taught in their basements. I would descend, assemble my horn, sit in a folding chair, park my sheet music on the stand, weather some insult aimed at my embouchure, and play whatever I had not been studying for the last week. My teachers-- industrious, frugal, starving men-- had one thing in common other than my unpreparedness: they'd all installed do-it-yourself showers in those basements. These units stood in some corner, usually my corner, and they'd drip... ploink, ploink. There was nothing more ominous than basements with leaking showers in them, and there was no telling when fear began, but my trombone kept those home improvements at bay. I was a hero. I had fewer illusions about my playing. Bob Green was...
