Daddy Long Legs
Born in Omaha, Nebraska on this date in 1899, American performer Fred Astaire.
Natives of Omaha Nebraska, Astaire and his older sister Adele showed considerable talent as young children, and their parents soon decided to move to New York City to start the pair in show business. It wasn’t long before they had a contract and traveled the country on the Orpheum Circuit of theaters. The siblings performed together until Adele’s marriage in 1932. Disappointing screen tests with RKO led to an uncertain start in movies, but the 1934 partnership with Ginger Rogers in the Gay Divorcee led off a string of successes and over 20 years of dance films.
Astaire had many partners beyond Rogers, including Eleanor Powell, Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Ann Miller, and Cyd Charisse. He is also remembered for dozens of movie song performances, tunes by some of the all-time greats, such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern. Only once did he receive an Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actor in Towering Inferno. But in 1950 he was awarded an honorary Oscar “"for his unique artistry and his contributions to the technique of musical pictures".
