Riding With The King

Riding With The King A Confederate Pride Ride and Rally will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in King, NC, which should surprise no one who knows the place. In 2004, the City of King built a veterans’ memorial on public land in Central Park. The memorial included a Christian flag, and later added a statue of a soldier kneeling before a Cross. Steven Hewitt, a retired SSgt. who served in Afghanistan as part of the National Guard, and a recipient of the Bronze Star, originally complained about the Christian flag in 2010.  A lawsuit was brought against the City in 2012, where the argument was made that the City was promoting Christianity. The case was settled in January 2015: http://www.armytimes.com/story/military/2015/01/12/protesters-return-christian-flag-statue-to-veterans-memorial-king-north-carolina-aclu/21639983/ Scott Burdick made a documentary, "In God We Trust?" in 2012. Terrorist!

Terrorist! Interesting stuff about the difference between How People Think Stuff Should Work, and How It Actually Works. Many folks are surprised to find out that Public, Legally Enforced Standards for Construction and Fire Protection are owned by Standards Developing Organizations, and not by the Public.   Those organizations are generally pretty efficient and timely in their work, especially in comparison to government entities like OSHA and the EPA.  But their work is not free (generally supported by subscriptions to professionals in related fields) and is not owned by the public, which is nonetheless often constrained by those rules. Just like with other IP and copyright issues, change is inevitable, but it's a little hard to see which way it will eventually work out. http://politics.blog.ajc.com/2015/07/28/georgia-accuses-public-records-activist-of-information-terrorism/

Eggs Bar None Originally shared by Alex Scrivener There is some well-founded nutritional logic to the pairing of eggs and booze: cysteine, a key amino acid in helping the liver function, is present in eggs, which is why that bacon, egg and cheese does wonders for your hangover. You can learn a lot about leaders by how they choose to have themselves portrayed.  Look at Caracalla, at any of his many surviving busts.  The cropped hair and beard.  The "You tawkin' to me?" turn of the head with furrowed brow and scowling lips.  His styling, bearing and expression are a radical departure from the flowing lines and dreamy expressions of his predecessors, the Antonines, the line exemplified by the philosopher/emperor Richard Harris Marcus Aurelius.  Caracalla set a new fashion.  After him emper...

Mega Burbs

Mega Burbs Low Rise Arcology... Without Property Taxes? Hmmmm. Originally shared by G.K. Nelson Improving the infrastructure, especially high-speed rail, will be critical. According to Zhang Gui, a professor at the Hebei University of Technology, Chinese planners used to follow a rule of thumb they learned from the West: All parts of an urban area should be within 60 miles of each other, or the average amount of highway that can be covered in an hour of driving. Beyond that, people cannot effectively commute. High-speed rail, Professor Zhang said, has changed that equation. Chinese trains now easily hit 150 to 185 miles an hour, allowing the urban area to expand. A new line between Beijing and Tianjin cut travel times from three hours to 37 minutes. That train has become so crowded that a second track is being laid. The next time conservatives complain that China is going to eat our economic lunch in the future, remind them that part of the reason is their investment in infrastructure...

Mixing It Up

Mixing It Up Originally shared by M Sinclair Stevens When the Segregated Team Up: Black Baseball Teams in Japan   In the mid-twentieth century my dad ran track in college. He was a vision of the midwestern American farm boy: pale freckled skin set off by flaming red hair. The college where my parents met, Knox College in Galesburg Illinois, had been founded in 1837 one of the first in the US not to discriminate on the basis of race. My mother still remembers being deeply impressed to learn that if a restaurant refused to serve a black runner on the team, that the entire track team, black and white, would stand up and walk out together. Yes. There were color lines in Illinois, a "northern" state. How easy it is for so many of us from the comfort of the present to forget the bigotry of the past. Money Talks

Money Talks [But] Schäuble was consistent throughout. His view was “I’m not discussing the programme – this was accepted by the previous government and we can’t possibly allow an election to change anything. Because we have elections all the time, there are 19 of us, if every time there was an election and something changed, the contracts between us wouldn’t mean anything.” So at that point I had to get up and say “Well perhaps we should simply not hold elections anymore for indebted countries”, and there was no answer. Survivor

Survivor We had large and unexpected emissions of Magic Smoke yesterday, as we left the dock. Ye Olde Volvo Penta has a combined starter/generator, originally controlled by a Dynastarter gizmo, long since dead and replaced by a starter solenoid and voltage regulator from a '57 Ford. Some part of all that failed spectacularly, AKA Caught Fire. Hilarity AKA Damage Control ensued. Reenacting dialog from Danger UXB about the merits of cutting the Blue or Red wire first, we eventually effected a repair. In the meantime, we had a small but active infestation of Fire Ants. A small advantage of comfort was imparted to the cockpit crew with neuropathy. The racing was almost anti-climatic, especially considering we had no competition. Managed to get back to dock with all sails stowed, just before the afternoon T-storms. Out to do it again, this time with more wind.

Robert Darvel was created by Gustave Le Rouge (Charley Colmes, Doctor Cornelius Kramm, Todd Marvel) and Gustave Guitton and appeared in Le Prisonnier de la Planète Mars (1908) and La Guerre des Vampires (1909). Robert Darvel is a Planetary Romance Hero. Darvel is an American engineer who is approached by a Hindu prince for a special project. The prince uses the psychic energy of thousands of fakirs, gathered in an isolated monastery, to send Darvel to Mars, which Darvel discovers is inhabited by a number of strange and inimical races, from flying octopi to man-sized crustaceans with antennae and claws to the Erloor, a hostile race of bat-winged vampires who rule over a small race of human slaves. The Kitchen

Image
The Kitchen [Nicolas Freeling] said he preferred the kitchen because you did not have to be nice to the customer. He also claimed that all fiction (with the possible exception of Jane Austen's) is propelled by crime or misdemeanour. Readers of a certain age and sensibility will recall the careers of Piet Van der Valk (and his wife Arlette), and Henri Castang (and his wife Vera).  Before he was a writer, Freeling was a cook.  And his two non-fiction books, The Kitchen, and The Cook, are well worth the read. Brought to mind because I've just now gotten a copy of Jacques Pépins "The Apprentice", to read.

Letting In The Jungle

Image
Letting In The Jungle I will let loose against you the fleet-footed vines— I will call in the Jungle to stamp out your lines! The roofs shall fade before it, The house-beams shall fall; And the Karela, the bitter Karela, Shall cover it all! In the gates of these your councils my people shall sing. In the doors of these your garners the Bat-folk shall cling; And the snake shall be your watchman, By a hearthstone unswept; For the Karela, the bitter Karela, Shall fruit where ye slept! Ye shall not see my strikers; ye shall hear them and guess. By night, before the moon-rise, I will send for my cess, And the wolf shall be your herdsman By a landmark removed; For the Karela, the bitter Karela, Shall seed where ye loved! I will reap your fields before you at the hands of a host. Ye shall glean behind my reapers for the bread that is lost; And the deer shall be your oxen On a headland untilled; For the Karela, the bitter Karela, Shall leaf where ye build! I have untied against you th...

Chasing The Good Ol' Boys... in the "Moonshine Capital of the World." “More than once I heard them say ‘He’s not like Charlie Felts. Charlie won’t swear on your back,’’ Gregory said. What the moonshiners meant by that was simple: Felts wouldn’t lie on the stand and swear that he recognized an accused man if he couldn’t make them out clearly or if they were running away when he came upon a still. “He did his job, told the truth and people respected him for it,” Gregory said. “Even people he sent to jail.” "Chasing The Good Ol' Boys And Girls Of Wilkes County" by A.E. There Can Be Only One

There Can Be Only One The hands of a magician, the matter of fact sensibility of a Zen master. I often wince at the superficiality and artifice of cooking shows. It's always a joy to me to watch Jacques Pépin at work... Originally shared by Alex Scrivener We talked about the state of modern chefdom. He was clear-eyed but uncranky. The undercooking of everything, especially vegetables, drove him crazy. So did excessive culinary piety: "I've been in restaurants where they bring over a carrot and say ‘This carrot was born the ninth of September. His name is Jean-Marie…' Just give me the goddamned carrot!'" Young chefs, he said, had become overly concerned with self-expression. Nouvelle cuisine had been about many things: fresher ingredients, new techniques, a sensitivity to place and season, healthier preparations, creativity, innovation. Out of all those mandates, chefs sometimes seemed to have only heard the final two. "That's how you wind up with a s...

What's It All About?

What's It All About? Say it with song... Originally shared by G.K. Nelson Well said. Constantly searching sentimental literature for unsentimental or “subversive” instances seems a perverse occupation, like scanning a nursery for ugly babies. The interesting question about babies is what makes them so cute, and the interesting question about love songs is why so many of them have such an unreasonable hold on our imagination. “Yesterday” is the most covered song ever written, and would not have been better if it were more realistically disabused about why she had to go. He doesn’t know; she wouldn’t say. That’s the love song. Sentiment, after all, is just the grumpy guy’s word for love. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/06/june-moon-tune

Koyaanisqatsi

Koyaanisqatsi The American Federal model is not ideal, no system or model is... At the least, this analysis demonstrates that the scope of the problem is not so immense as to be a deal breaker. Growing up in Europe, I didn't pay much attention to the construction of the Euro, and whatever little I remember has nothing to do with the economics of it. Now, older, having lived in the US for a while, with a Greek wife, I'm looking at the way the Euro is unraveling and I've been using the opportunity to try to figure out how it works (or, rather, why it doesn't). The core mechanism that allows multiple states to share the same currency is pretty simple: since the weaker states can't devalue their cur...

Ride 'Em, Cowboy!

Ride 'Em, Cowboy! Originally shared by Rick Wayne (Author) Three And A Half Stars It's a holiday weekend here in the U.S. We get a lot of bad press around the world -- not without reason. I often tell people I'm proud to be an American, although that wasn't always so. For most of my life, it's been cool to hate on the stars and stripes. When I was younger, mostly until college, I would often keep my mouth shut. Before university, most of the history you learn is about your own country. Not ALL of course, but that's certainly the focus in most places, since the ultimate goal of compulsory education is not to turn out educated citizens but simply citizens. But world history was a big part of my higher curriculum -- although my primary training is biological science -- and so for the first time in my life I got to learn about all those other countries out there. Ouch. Here's the deal. The Declaration of Independence is an amazing document, unprecedented in its...
