Where Never Is Heard, An Encouraging Word

Where Never Is Heard, An Encouraging Word Our local Fiery Fomenters, survivors of the Anarchy of Occupy, have been rattling the doors of City Hall, trying to get us to be a Sanctuary City. That's a bit of a sticky wicket anywhere, but a bit worse in North Carolina, where a law was crafted to prohibit such shenanigans: http://www.wral.com/mccrory-signs-bill-outlawing-sanctuary-cities-in-nc/15035244/ And, even with a new Governor, the Legislature is working on doubling down on that bet: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article134094579.html And, of course, Jeff Sessions is doubling down, as well: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/sessions-urges-sanctuary-cities-comply-immigration-laws-article-1.3010685 So, the best we could do, without breaking the law, was to craft the following resolution: https://docs.google.com/document/d/132OjRZFYVyff1qVSRXyDLT2arEVtXeorYc9R8SmdOQY/edit?usp=sharing I invite you to read it. I am not supposed to be motivated about performing this task, but I will force myself to express excitement for the benefit of my fellow Marines and to tactfully annoy my superiors who gave me the task. 9. We Try Harder

Image
We Try Harder Persistence pays off. Took a second today, but first in the regatta. 'Bout put a crick in my neck trimming the spinnaker today, but we managed to run back before the wind blew out... Thanks to the liberal application of quality firewater and NSAIDs last night, we were only partially crippled up this morning, and not so bleary eyed that we couldn't discern the windward pin with the benefit of powerful optical devices.

"Repeal & Replace" No, I'm not talking about Obamacare... "The decision to delay the vote marks an acute embarrassment for Trump, who had gambled big by presenting holdout House conservatives with a take-it-or-leave it ultimatum on Thursday night and put his own credibility on the line." "It also puts Ryan in a much weakened political position, after being defied by his own conference, which seems just as unsuited to governing in the Trump era as it was when it was effectively a protest coalition under Obama." http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/24/politics/house-health-care-vote/

Come And Work With Me

Come And Work With Me “I’m leftist-minded. Edhi Sahib was too,” he tells me. “Some 40 years ago, he said to me, ‘You can’t say when the revolution will come, but this is a way to serve the common man. Come and work with me.’ So I joined.” He gets back into his ambulance to drive back to the base. Driving along, he sees an old man knocked off his motorbike and immediately stops to help, administering first aid at the side of the road, expertly checking for broken bones. As the man leaves, he grips Safdar’s hand. “May you always be happy,” he says. Safdar gets back into his ambulance and drives on. “If you see someone drowning and you can be of use, why wouldn’t you help? It’s about help, not money,” he says. Kiss Of Death

Kiss Of Death Another inkstained wretch has left the building. “After a session with Breslin, the typewriters would give up,” his Herald-Tribune colleague Dick Wald told The News. Breslin himself said: “Rage is the only quality which has kept me, or anybody I have ever studied, writing columns for newspapers." "Reporting is all about legwork, getting out and finding the story. But all the stories are on the top floors, so you have to learn to climb stairs. That's what reporting is all about, climbing tenement stairs." Also, this about Trump: "He knew Trump’s father, because Trump’s father was a Queens guy and Jimmy was the poet laureate of Queens," Hamill recalled. He said Breslin saw the 45th President as the kind of guy from his old neighborhood who "is all mouth and couldn't fight his way out of an empty lot." He'll be missed. https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/legendary-daily-news-columnist-jimmy-breslin-dead-article-1.3002601

Kernel Panic

Image
Kernel Panic We had to postpone the Mad Trad Feast until all the resident Pratie Heads came home to roost. And still had to substitute Cornbread for Irish Soda Bread out of expediency. Still tasted right good, though. Here's a useful tale about the inauthenticity of corned beef, and the blending of immigrant traditions: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/is-corned-beef-really-irish-2839144/ (NB: my daughter, being properly brought up, will not tolerate sugar in cornbread, or raisins in irish soda bread.)

Farewell To Ireland

Farewell To Ireland This tune was recorded live on tour in the UK back in 1997, when The Celtic Fiddle Festival consisted of fiddlers Kevin Burke, Johnny Cunningham, and Christian LeMaitre, with Soig Siberil on guitar. Kevin Burke (who is Irish), had this remembrance of Johnny Cunningham: "He said part of his heritage was Irish and the other part was Scottish, so half of him wanted a drink and the other half didn't want to pay for it." Johnny was a wit, a wag, and a wonder on the fiddle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frjRU_spyj4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frjRU_spyj4

O'Carolan's Draught

O'Carolan's Draught Dean Jonathan Swift said that Turlough O'Carolan might have had a fondness for the "juice of the barley." At some point, a doctor advised Turlough to drink less, but when he began to feel worse, another doctor prescribed the opposite. Turlough immediately began to feel better and wrote “Farewell to Whiskey” and “O’Carolan’s Receipt”. In another story, another professional harper named David Murphy said that Turlough’s music was like “bones without beef.” Turlough is said to have dragged Murphy across the room kicking and screaming, saying, “Put beef to that air, you puppy.” I first heard Zan McLeod play with Mike Cross, in Chapel Hill, back in the day. When they traveled to Nashville, they met Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, of the Bothy Band. Zan and Tríona formed a band, Touchstone, that cut a couple of great albums. They were a lot of fun, live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzau-oz8XxA

Matchbox Models

Matchbox Models I've been seeing more and more examples of multi-story wood construction in the past five years or so. I think part of it is due to the increased affordability of engineered wood products, as well as the (hoped for) benefits of ease of maintenance. But wood structures only meet fire code when they are properly clad and firestopped. Some insurance carriers are requiring increased security on structures under construction, when they are most vulnerable. Not to mention that wood structures shrink and settle, over time, and it isn't certain that these structures are being designed and built to acknowledge that. http://www.wral.com/massive-downtown-raleigh-fire-destroys-new-apartment-building/16589787/

Origin Story

Origin Story VF: My favorite line from your biography, Mad Life, is when you claim that at an early age you “set out to prove that adults were full of sh*t.” That almost sounds like a mission statement for your life’s work. Al Jaffee: It could be. Some days I think I was being too harsh. But then I pick up a newspaper and read about what’s happening in the world, and I think, “Yep, I had it right.” VF: Are all adults full of sh*t, or just certain ones? Al Jaffee: Parents and teachers and politicians. It doesn’t matter who they are. As a little kid, if you have any kind of brain at all, you begin to see that the world operates under a very twisted set of rules. Adults tell you one thing, but then they do another. If you dwell on that hypocrisy for too long, well . . . VF: You could end up a professional cartoonist. Al Jaffee: [Laughs] That has been known to happen. Where I'm From

Where I'm From I am from clothespins, from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride. I am from the dirt under the back porch. (Black, glistening, it tasted like beets.) I am from the forsythia bush the Dutch elm whose long-gone limbs I remember as if they were my own. I'm from fudge and eyeglasses, from Imogene and Alafair. I'm from the know-it-alls and the pass-it-ons, from Perk up! and Pipe down! I'm from He restoreth my soul with a cottonball lamb and ten verses I can say myself. I'm from Artemus and Billie's Branch, fried corn and strong coffee. From the finger my grandfather lost to the auger, the eye my father shut to keep his sight. Under my bed was a dress box spilling old pictures, a sift of lost faces to drift beneath my dreams. I am from those moments-- snapped before I budded -- leaf-fall from the family tree. -- George Ella Lyon http://www.georgeellalyon.com/where.html

Raymond consults his watch—one-fifteen. Mrs. Hodges’s golden retriever, Ralph, starts barking. “Dogs will bark,” Raymond intones. “Animals will go to bed. Pregnant women will have their babies. Birds will cease to twitter.” “Twitter?” Sharon says. “Well, they sure are twittering now.” Sharon has a lot of birds because of the bird feeder Alister made in Shop II. “Trust me. What I'm Doing Here This is also a question that occurs to me, from time to time... One take. Originally shared by **** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcUeothSPyc&feature=share

Swag For The Brag Wall

Image
Swag For The Brag Wall Well, despite breaking a record number of halyards in one season (seems like we were going up the mast for something every other race), and not being able to compete in one regatta because a malfunctioning railroad bridge barred our passage, we managed to win some stuff. Took first in the Commodore's Regatta, which was breezy enough to dismast one of the smaller boats... Took second in the Winter Series, and first place in Boat Of The Year. Skipper took Sailor of the Year, although to keep his hat size down, we reminded him that we really only sail with him because his lovely wife plies us with irresistible food and alcoholic beverages... If we weren't so busy getting drunk, and didn't have the failing eyesight of the old, we would have looked to see how many other times we made Boat Of The Year. Like the Oar Race, we've won more than one or two...

Truth Will Set You Free

Truth Will Set You Free Baby Jean, Doc, and Moses Mo still rocking it out... Wyzard still tours with them, but I don't think I've ever seen him play an acoustic bass... If you missed them live, back in the day, there's video of them tearing up Rockpalast, back in 1978. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YO9scqiZE4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2k1jwgYt6M

Men Of Action

Men Of Action I have to confess that I enjoy a certain amount of swashbuckling derring do, explosions, and sultry looks in my escapist fare. "What Is Scandal?"

"What Is Scandal?" "But what is scandal? Scandal is saying one thing and doing another; it is a double life, a double life. A totally double life: ‘I am very Catholic, I always go to Mass, I belong to this association and that one; but my life is not Christian, I don’t pay my workers a just wage, I exploit people, I am dirty in my business, I launder money …’ A double life. And so many Christians are like this, and these people scandalize others."
