VF: My favorite line from your biography, Mad Life, is when you claim that at an early age you “set out to prove that adults were full of sh*t.” That almost sounds like a mission statement for your life’s work.

Al Jaffee: It could be. Some days I think I was being too harsh. But then I pick up a newspaper and read about what’s happening in the world, and I think, “Yep, I had it right.”

VF: Are all adults full of sh*t, or just certain ones?

Al Jaffee: Parents and teachers and politicians. It doesn’t matter who they are. As a little kid, if you have any kind of brain at all, you begin to see that the world operates under a very twisted set of rules. Adults tell you one thing, but then they do another. If you dwell on that hypocrisy for too long, well . . .

VF: You could end up a professional cartoonist.

Al Jaffee: [Laughs] That has been known to happen.
