The Etymology Of Eating

The Etymology Of Eating Part of this, of course, is because grandma's cooking doesn't reach back to the days of mules and feedsack dresses, anymore. But even in my lifetime, the ingredients have changed enough to make some store-bought white trash recipes invalid. One example: the trick of adding pudding mix to cake mix. Nowadays, that (or something analogous) is done straight from the factory. The best recipes ring a few idiosyncratic changes on the old standards, and give an ancestor or church lady credit for it. If for no other reason than ancestors and church ladies don't get enough credit, anyhow. And using Hellman's in a Southern BBQ joint? Huh uh. Nope. https://www.ourstate.com/mayonnaise/ Originally shared by Damn interesting https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/secret-family-recipes-copied

The Smart Set

The Smart Set Federal law requires congressional approval "to furnish or redecorate the office of a department head" if the cost exceeds $5000. A month before the furniture was ordered, a former top HUD official filed a complaint about Mrs. Carson's attempt to get around this requirement. The Algorithm And The Enigma

The Algorithm And The Enigma Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None has ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master: His songs are stronger songs, and his feet are faster. Originally shared by Ralf Haring "It knows who you are and what you want. No, not that thing you think you want. It knows what you really want. It knows what you’re going to want tomorrow, next week, 20 years from now. It knows what you’ll regret on your deathbed. Trust it to choose your fate; trust it to choose your friends. It sees the seeds of identity in you and in all of your peers. It knows who among you will find courage and brilliance and power and friendship. It knows who you will become, and it knows precisely who you are. Can't Go Left, Can't Go Right Originally shared by Bobby Seale Ten-Point Platform Program & the formation of the Black Panther Party Black Panther Party, 1966, when Huey and I founded that organization, that particular year numerous acts of police brutality had sparked a lot of spontaneous riots, something that Huey and I were against, these spontaneous riots. Even a year earlier, in 1965 in Watts you know 65 people were killed, 200 wounded, 5,000 arrested. And Huey and I began to try to figure out how could we organize 5,000 youthful Black folks into some kind of political-electoral power movement. Stokely Carmichael was on the scene with Black Power. We were questioning, Huey and I, about the need for a functional definition of power and we came up with this, "That power is the ability to define phenomenon then in turn make it act in a desired manner." Well the phenomenon of racism structured in the city council at that time, ah, Huey and I working with the Nort...

Rhumb Line

Image
Rhumb Line Loading and ballast adjustment was required to reach the Plimsoll Line. All crew participated, to no ill effects. We did not leave much tin on the table at the awards banquet this year. First for the Frostbite series. First in Spinnaker B for the Commodore's Regatta, with corrected times that would have won Spinnaker A, as well. We took Boat of the Year for the third time running, fifth time since the perpetual plaque was made, some decades back. Our Fearless Leader took ICRC Skipper of the Year. He said something about how lucky he is to have assembled the perfect crew. We mentioned how grateful we were that he let us race with him, in the absence of that perfect crew. We also reminded everybody that the real reason we keep racing is because his wife makes really good sammiches for us. Someone made a point about how old the boat was (1978). We admitted that was part of our edge, because both the boat and the crew (youngest is 50) are going downhill all the time.

Cut To The Bone

Cut To The Bone Author Richard Hooker, whose real name is H. Richard Hornberger, a New Jersey native who lived in Bremen and practiced medicine here in Waterville after the war, was quoted in the Boston Globe in 1977 saying, “I thought the movie was great, but the television thing isn’t my kind of humor. It’s someone else’s idea of what medical humor is supposed to be.” The book was good. The movie was good. The TV show was great. What it was, was Magic. "It's His Right"

"It's His Right" Would you take in a troubled male teenager? Would you allow him to bring in an unknown number of firearms, and trust him to secure them properly? This is the kind of bad judgement we're talking about. Treating lethal weapons as banal objects of unconcern, with an absurd level of protection, verging on fetishism. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/18/us/snead-cruz-florida-suspect.html Mr. Snead said his wife turned angrily to Mr. Cruz, still wearing a hospital gown. “Really, Nik?” she asked. “Really?” He said Mr. Cruz replied that he was sorry. "The Boston Athenaeum—a 211-year-old independent library in the center of Beacon Hill—is home to about 150,000 rare books. Some are old, and some are brand new. Some are huge, and some are tiny. Some are made of lead, some are made of shredded army uniforms, and one is, famously, made of human skin. Until recently, Stanley Ellis Cushing was in charge of all of them. Cushing began his career at the Athenaeum in 1970, right after he graduated from college. He ended up staying for 47 years—“longer than anybody else in the last hundred years or so,” he says—working as a bookbinder and conservator, then as the Chief of the Conservation Department, and finally as the first-ever Curator of Rare Books. While in this last position, he began the library’s artists’ books collection, and took the opportunity to scoop up everything from bark cloth catalogs to anti-war tracts...

"A Unique Outlook On Life"

"A Unique Outlook On Life" http://iphf.org/inductees/lewis-hine/ The early 1930s marked our country’s greatest depression, and Hine so desperately wanted to take part with Roy Stryker, who led the FSA project of documenting the people of the depression, but was repeatedly denied. One reason may be that Hine never relinquished ownership or rights of his negatives. Due to the depression, ownership of his negatives and the growing lack of work, Hine’s later years were spent practically as an “unknown.” After Hine's death, his son Corydon donated his prints and negatives to the Photo League, which was dismantled in 1951. The Museum of Modern Art was offered his pictures and did not accept them, but the George Eastman House did. The Library of Congress holds over 5,000 Hine photographs, including examples of his child labor and Red Cross photographs, his work portraits, and his WPA and TVA images. Take A Free Ride

Take A Free Ride "If a law isn't public, it isn't a law." U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer This is another common sense argument that is more complicated than it appears. AFAIK, folks like Elsevier, who have a stranglehold on scientific journals, do not contribute to the costs of research in any way (and, it should be noted, much of the research that they do publish is free of the data sets that scientists use to support their conclusions). However, the standards bodies that create codes for construction have their research and administration funded by these fees. And if you've had much experience with OSHA, you might want to think twice about handing that whole thing over to the government to manage. Either way, it has to be paid for. I say this as a builder who has more than a little experience of both the arbitrariness and value of building code compliance. I also know some folks who have worked with construction standards bodies. It's also wor...

Dem Bones

Dem Bones As we come to Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, a section of her memoir, headed “Priest’s Beast Friend,” bears noting. Cunningham here reports that Sheen had a dog named Chumley. “My uncle trained the dog himself, and when people were over for dinner, Chumley would sit by his seat. Before the meal, my uncle would tell Chumley that it was time to say grace, and the dog could put his paws together and bow his head as if in prayer. “Then, when giving him treats, my uncle would say, ‘Chumley! It’s Lent! Mortify yourself’ And he'd lay a piece of meat on the dog’s nose. Chumley would be very still. When my uncle finally said, ‘Easter!’ Chumley would snap back to life – and snack on the treat.” via Ray Radlein https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-fight-within-the-catholic-church-over-the-bones-of-americas-first-televangelist
