Image
Tết Nguyên Đán https://www.npr.org/2018/01/29/580811124/military-victory-but-political-defeat-the-tet-offensive-50-years-later Originally shared by Semicentenary Project After some sporadic attacks on bases the day before, the Tet Offensive was unleashed on nearly all of South Vietnam's remaining military bases and major cities simultaneously on January 31, 1968, with the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army coordinating a massive assault that was larger than U.S. intelligence had forecast. An estimated 84,000 troops had infiltrated provincial and district capitals and took advantage of the Tet holiday ceasefire to strike in what would become the turning point of the war. More American soldiers would be killed in action during that day than on any other day of the Vietnam War, with 245 deaths of people whose names are etched upon the Vietnam Veterans Memorial today.

One little boy kept breaking out in spontaneous loud shouts of "Yay!", just in sitting down to the idea of Duck Donuts. Hard to resist that. I still have a soft spot for Krispy Kreme, having been raised on them, hypnotized by the magical donut making machine. But KK doesn't make a maple glazed with BACON. Two Speed Winch

Image
Two Speed Winch Well, we led the fleet across the line for all three races yesterday, and took two firsts and a second. Only broke one thing (baby stay adjustment line), lost two things (a ball cap and a winch handle), and caught one thing on fire (an antifreeze hose). We took a new kid along. We think he had fun. He said so, anyway. We experienced a sudden forty degree wind shift in 15+ kts that forced an unintended tack. Lots of unexpected heeling, banging, and flailing. When it was over, we asked him what he thought. "It was INTENSE!" he said. We mentioned the old saw about sailing being hours of boredom, punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Or at least, lots of shouting.

In 1965, I was employed by the City of Oakland’s Department of Human resources, when all the hullabaloo about “Black Power” broke onto the scene. I argued with several of the fresh “Black Power” advocates that we black folks will not have any power until we acquire thousands of political seats, that there were counties in many southern states whose population grossly outnumbered white folks. A black sheriff could be elected in many counties if we had the power to vote in those counties.
