Working Class: Stiffed

Working Class: Stiffed "Election Day cataclysm or not, the Democrats remain a party of two distinct groups: a wealthy, motivated, and highly resourceful professional class that supplies the party its leadership and ideological compass; and an unenthusiastic, unorganized, and largely nonwhite working class, whose chief reason for voting Democratic is that the other major party is packed full of racists. It's The Economy, Stupid

It's The Economy, Stupid I'll just add that Globalism is Jim Crow Lite., where manufacturers outsource all the usual risks to employees and the environment to more desperate countries that don't worry much about such things, yet... And all the Furriners nervy enough to come to Our Country, on top of all that? Well, of course they're not going to find much welcome... And the Service economy? Story Arc

Story Arc Sometime back in the 70's, I bought a Wondrous Thing, probably from a head shop, or some funky book store. It was a curved lucite prism that you'd hang in a window, and it would project various rainbow patterns in the room. It was called a Spectrarc. It was made by a guy named Fred DaMert, from Oakland, CA. He cast the first versions of these things in the daytime, while driving a truck to make a living at night. I usually hang it up in a southern facing window in the winter time, when the low slanting light really fires it up. It's an old thing, with more than a few nicks from crash landings from pet induced mishaps and monofilament failure, but none bad enough to affect its function. But I've never seen another one like it, in all these years, and I got to wondering if they were still being made. I found the original packing tube and instruction sheet while cleaning up the other day, and did some web searching... Come to find out that Fred passed away la...

Inside The Wire

Image
Inside The Wire Originally shared by The British Library J G Ballard was born #onthisday in 1930. The young Ballard’s World War II internment in the Japanese Lunghua camp near Shanghai informed his 1984 novel ‘Empire of the Sun’. After the novel was published, readers sent Ballard letters; some of congratulations, others criticising his description of the camp. He also received lists, photographs and this wartime blueprint of the camp from 1943. On it are marked the perimeter fence, barracks, guard houses and vegetable gardens that were Ballard’s home between 1942 and 1945, and which were to influence his writing throughout his life. #BLMaps Image © Estate of J G Ballard

The Master Of Space And Time

The Master Of Space And Time Originally shared by Randy Culler RIP Leon Russell Memories from John McCuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: The sad news came today. The news that a friend in life and music passed away last night came from my wife this morning, while I am on the road. The road. That is where "the master of space and time" Leon Russell spent a better part of his life, and did so quite graciously. A shy, true southern gentleman, Leon has been in my life since summer of 1966, when he came and watched the NGDB rehearse at the Ash Grove club in Hollywood. Thanks to Leon I got to play with some fantastic musicians over the years he introduced me to (Bill Wyman, Edgar Winter, Gary Busey). Thanks to Leon my mother had many great hours of her life made easier as she listened to his masterful piano and soulful voice. Here is one story about Leon from my writings that may give you an insight in to what this shy icon was like as a person. As a rocker, he was a master. While ...

Seen The Elephant

Image
Seen The Elephant Originally shared by Rugger Ducky Yesterday I decided to change my original plan to attend the San Jose Veterans Day Parade. We decided as a family to go have breakfast at Bill's Cafe in Willow Glen. As I was parking and getting ready to follow my family and a visiting friend inside, I saw an elderly gentleman wearing a WWII/Korean War Veteran hat and his ribbons/medals. He was leaving the restaurant to head to the parade to be a part of it, and calling back to folks to make sure they came to watch it. I was wearing only a digital camo pattern hat that said Army to identify myself as a veteran. It was the most I had it in me to do. I walked up to him, and said: I want to thank you today sir, but make my apologies to you that I can't attend the parade today. I simply don't have the heart in me to salute the colors today. I said this, having no idea how he voted, what he thought about women veterans, or anything else. I had already read the story told to me ...

From Bitter To Better

From Bitter To Better If you've lived in the South, you've seen this awful seesaw act before. That's not to diminish the awfulness of it. But, the struggle isn't new, either, as it seems to be in some other places. In every case, progress has slowly gathered up supporters from the other side, some by conversion, others by wary pragmatism. I think a lot of things are better than they used to be, not as good as they need to be. And my fight to make things better isn't about fear, except in abolishing it. Because most worst things come from fear, and most best things from understanding and love. via Cara Evangelista http://bittersoutherner.com/we-are-bitter-2016

Pretty Soon You Gonna Pay

Pretty Soon You Gonna Pay I live amongst the People that did this. I saw this coming. For those of you that didn't... Time to realize that there are more of them (slightly) than there are of you. And that they were scared and angry enough to be led to do this thing. This, too, shall pass. But not without a lot of pain. Opposition is needed, yes. But also, understanding. The People voted for Not Business As Usual, because the Status Quo wasn't good enough for them. They hope that a Strong Man will fix things. Even if he breaks things to do it. The Internet would not have elected this Strong Man. That should tell you that the Internet is not the Here, not the Now, and probably not the Future As The Internet Imagined It. Serious people are going to get up and start cleaning up the mess. Both the mess we already got, and the ones we're getting ready to have. Best to be resolute about it, but also kind, when you can be. Don't let the hate and fear get any bigger...

The Brave (Insecure) Little Toaster Originally shared by Ralf Haring "I don’t actually own a wireless toaster. But I devised a test. Renting a small server from Amazon, I gussied it up to look like an unsecured web device, opening a web port that hackers commonly use to remotely control computers. Instead of allowing real access, though, I set up a false front: Hackers would think they were logging into a server, but I’d really just record their keystrokes and IP addresses.
