Eunice had told us her greatest birthday wish was to eat "colored pancit." (After an hour of questioning we found out that she meant spaghetti.) Eunice lives in Barangay Garawon, Hernani, Eastern Samar, Philippines, facing the Pacific Ocean. Her home was among those washed out by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Her father is a recipient of NVC's Peter Project which provided him with a motorized fishing boat to replace the one he lost to the super typhoon. Her mother is a beneficiary of our Project Joseph which has given her cooking utensils and a stove so she can augment the family income. ~ Negrense Volunteers for Change https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1049632048411782&id=132828936758769

My First Android

Image
My First Android Thanks to the generosity of a friend (Thanks, Charley!) I'm now the proud owner of a Remix Mini. It's a cute little hockey puck of a computer, that I'm mostly interested in using as a media center. I only recently came out of the Stone Age of CRTs to an LCD with HDMI, but no Smart TV functions. I still have an OTA antenna bolted to the chimney (gasp!). I looked longingly at the AppleTV, but as I'm not at all locked into the Apple Video Store, I decided it would not suit. I looked next at the various Raspberry Pi devices, but as with all Hacks, there are an almost endless list of possible variables, and I never finished my homework on it. This gizmo is pretty nice. You have to bring your own HDMI monitor, and keyboard/mouse. It has some fixed memory on board, and a microSD slot for more. Two USB ports for input or storage. Draws 10W. The clever thing about Remix OS is that it presents Android apps in a Windowed environment. Media apps like Kodi, ...

Agist Agonistes

Agist Agonistes It used to be that convenience and usability in tech gadgets was mostly constrained by scarcity of resources. That really isn't true, anymore, except for those who desire a completely immersive experience. So I find it pretty irritating when gadgets and platforms sacrifice basic usability for gee whiz gimcrackery. Although, with Google engineers having a median age of less than thirty, I should not be surprised. Apple has generally done better with accessibility tweaks to its platforms, but the drive to be cool and stylish still makes lots of iOS functions less than ideal for folks with aging eyes. The current trend for "soothing" grey type on grey (or colored) backgrounds is everything I hate about "design." In a similar vein, I'm amused to note that the web version of Goober+ now has a red top banner with white (miniscule) type. Guess what color the notification gizmo is? Red. Eesh. "Language tends not to do what we want it to." via Ralf Haring Originally shared by Allen Varney "English’s weirdness began with its transformation in the mouths of people more at home with vastly different tongues. We’re still talking like them, and in ways we’d never think of. When saying ‘eeny, meeny, miny, moe’, have you ever felt like you were kind of counting? Well, you are -- in Celtic numbers, chewed up over time but recognisably descended from the ones rural Britishers used when counting animals and playing games. ‘Hickory, dickory, dock’ -- what in the world do those words mean? Well, here’s a clue: hovera, dovera, dick were eight, nine and ten in that same Celtic counting list." But if no one reads it, then that won't happen. And, the DOJ now says that not only has it not read it, it has instructed everyone in the exec branch not to read it for fear that reading it ...

PDA by the SDP within the SDO of the OSD for LGBT In MA. Under an executive order just signed by Baker, the program will expand to include businesses owned by all veterans and people with disabilities — as well as those owned by the LGBT community. As I mentioned in a post about a California program, I wonder: How will anyone know whether a business owner is bisexual? Do you have to say that you’ve had sex with members of the same sex? What if you just say that you’re attracted to members of the same sex? Or is the state relying on the assumption that non-bisexuals would be reluctant to label themselves bisexual, even when that helps them get valuable contracts, for fear that the label will come out to their friends (or to other prospective business partner...

Maverick's Ten Commandments

Image
Maverick's Ten Commandments 1. If you don't have a fighting hand, drop it and wait for another. 2. In five-card stud, never draw a third card unless your hole card or your open card either equals or tops the highest card showing around the table. A back-to-back pair is an exception, of course. 3. In draw poker, "Jacks-or-better" to open, never call an opener unless you have the pair of Jacks beaten. 4. Never draw to an inside straight. 5. Never draw to a three-card flush. 6. Always call a known bluffer if you have a better than average hand. 7. Don't play poker with women. 8. Don't play with men who can't afford to lose. 9. Don't play yourself, if you can't afford to lose. 10. If you find yourself in a losing streak, relax and wait! There always will be another hand or even another game. #ThrowbackThursday

Seditious Fried Chicken

Seditious Fried Chicken Originally shared by **** """ In a speech on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei sought to emphasize why shouting “Death to America,” words that proponents of improved relations call unhelpful at best, will be forever justified. He also suggested they should not be taken literally. “The slogan ‘Death to America’ is backed by reason and wisdom,” he said in a speech. “It goes without saying that the slogan does not mean death to the American nation; this slogan means death to the United States policies, death to arrogance.” """ Here's what's funny: Khameini here sounds exactly like a character from 1984 . It seems difficult for Khameini not to know that. Well, not know that , but recognize the general principle Orwell was following. "Marg bar Amrika" is just Iranian duckspeak, but here he speaks as if the slogan held in it deep, unfolding meaning. Because it does or, at least, it has come to. Because it's had to. Because...

Skylon

Skylon Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh "For the last quarter century or so, a British company called Reaction Engines has been making slow, steady progress toward a hybrid system that has the potential to bind aircraft and spacecraft together. Reaction’s Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE) could power a safe, efficient, and very cool looking single-stage-to-orbit vehicle. It's an enormous technical challenge, but one that may now be realistically solvable thanks to massive new investment from BAE Systems and the British government. BAE just ponied up £20.6 million for a 20-percent stake in the company. And with £60 million in grants coming from the UK government, the company thinks it should have the resources it needs to stage a full-scale ground test of SABRE by 2020, and unmanned test flights around 2025." http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/aerospace/aviation/bae-systems-uk-invest-120-million-in-skylon-space-plane-engine-prototype

The Struggle Is Real

The Struggle Is Real But if it takes too long, then maybe it isn't worth it... I'm sympathetic to the writer, and to the issues involved, but... This stuff is hard, and academic administration is full of fear these days.  Fear of change, and fear of running out of money.  It is not always easy to sell discomfort to prospective students and their parents, even if you believe it builds character. It's probably worth noting that Brandeis' previous president, Jehuda Reinharz, had explored closing the Rose Museum and selling its collections, because of dire economic circumstances, and that his successor, Frederick Lawrence, recently resigned in the wake of a number of free speech controversies. Just because you're doing it right, for the right reasons, doesn't make it easy, or even possible.  That takes perseverance, among other things. http://www.salon.com/2015/10/28/i_wanted_to_be_a_supporter_of_survivors_on_campus_and_a_good_teacher_i_didnt_realize_just_how_imposs...

Auspicious Cranes

Image
Auspicious Cranes A depiction of a real event, supposedly, at the beginning of Emperor Huizong's reign, and attributed to his hand. "Just as the sky grows light, rainbow-hued clouds brush the roof ridge. Immortal birds, proclaiming good news, suddenly appear with their measured dance. Soaring windborne, truly companions of the isles of immortality, Two by two, they show their noble forms." Huizong was an aesthete, and as the eleventh son, not expected to ascend to power.  But, unluckily, his all ten of his brothers died and left him to rule. He did not, apparently, make such a good job of it, with the kingdom eventually taken over by the Juchen, and he and his son ending up poor and miserable in Manchuria.  Born in 1082, he reigned for twenty six years (1100-1126) and died in 1035, at the age of 52.

Every Day Carry

Image
Every Day Carry Old coot wisdom is seldom easily imparted. In fact, it is often downright unkind. But it has value, nonetheless. Originally shared by Alvin Stearns Think like water It is the most Buddha thing my Grandfather ever said to me.  It blew my small young mind.  Think like a thing that is not me, that does not even have a mind.  OK!  I was in.  Hesitantly.  Fearfully. I was under my grandparents' mobile home in the clearing in the old growth pine forest.  I was about ten years old.  He'd sent me in because I was ten, small, and could get to the pipe needing attention.   I protested.  I had no idea why he was sending me into the spider-infested dankness.  Did I do something wrong?  He talked to me about water.  Water?  What?  I was ten, what did I know about pipes and basic domestic functions?  I needed context! All my life, all I've ever need is context.  Why is our civilization so bad at that? "What am I looking for?" I begged as I kicked my legs to p...
