Pimiento or Pimento Cheese?

Pimiento or Pimento Cheese? "Southerners are known to be fairly easy to rile up." http://blog.virginiawillis.com/2015/01/pimiento-or-pimento-cheese/

What Is Southern?

What Is Southern? "Southern is Reynolds Price discussing his mother’s cooking." And Truman Capote cadging biscuits from you, hot from the oven. At least part of Miss Lewis' gift is that of a writer, and a storyteller. In the South, stories and writing and cooking seem to be intertwined. This essay is a good example of that, and of Miss Lewis' talent.  If you haven't read her work before, this will give you a good taste. From my experience, not all her recipes work, not all of them anyway, and not all the time.  The ones she did with Scott Peacock are better, in that regard, anyway. And for those of you that haven't been to a hog killing?  It ain't as pretty as described in her books.  And it smells.  Being poor was (and is) harder than it looks, but you could eat real well, sometimes. Authentic as all get out. http://www.gourmet.com/magazine/2000s/2008/01/whatissouthern_lewis18ff.html

Richt Tumshie Heid

Image
Richt Tumshie Heid Originally shared by Dirk Puehl “There is a great deal more to be got out of things than is generally got out of them, whether the thing be a chapter of the Bible or a yellow turnip“ (George MacDonald) Once upon a time a smith called Jack Oldfield struck a deal with the devil. And when his time had come, he tricked Old Nick three times to let him go for a while, but his last stunt banned Jack from entering Heaven and Hell as well and the lost soul was condemned to wander the netherworlds for all eternity. The fiend took pity, though, gave Jack a glowing lump of coal, once used to heat the fires down below, for a bit of light and warmth on the way and Jack put the glowing coal in a hollowed out turnip and was known as Jack of the Lantern, Jack O’ Lantern, ever since. Whether the old Jack O’Lanterns made of turnips, known as rutabagas to the Irish or Rübengeister in the German-speaking countries, represented the spirits loose on All Hallow’s Eve or were used to ward t...

Too Old For Air Guitar?

Too Old For Air Guitar? Perish the thought! Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh "Bohemian Rhapsody celebrates its 40th birthday on 31 October, 2015. Guitarist Brian May recalls the song's creation, and why he'll never grow tired of hearing it. [...] THE BEGINNING There was no demo. It was all in Freddie's head and on lots of little pieces of paper, which he used to make notes on. And I mean literally notes. He would put A♭, C♯, D♭ in little blocks. So Freddie had the framework in his head and he and Roger [Taylor, drums] and John [Deacon, bass] set out each part as a backing track. Then we set about embroidering it." http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-34651067

Ornery

Ornery KING: Last scene of "The Quiet Man" Maureen's character whispers something in the ear of John Wayne's character. Whatever she said apparently shocked Wayne because his head jerked back and his eyes grows wide with disbelief. Wayne never told anyone what she said and John Ford the director never did either.  O'HARA: That was the deal. When John Ford said you are to say so and so To Wayne, I said, what? Me? No way. And he said, you're being ordered to do it. You do it. And I realized it was nothing I could do. When you try to battle with John Ford, you have to give in. And I said, well there's one stipulation. That you will never tell anybody what it is that you demanded that I say. And, John Wayne will never tell. And the three of us made the deal.  KING: One can imagine it was sexual or cursing or both?  O'HARA: Little bit of both.  KING: And Wayne did not know you were going to say it?  O'HARA: No. Didn't you see the look on his face wh...

Holy War

Holy War I don't think that Manohla Dargis likes Bill Murray all that much. But fortunately, Bill doesn't read reviews: "I don't really read the reviews — but I remember one I read a long time ago that said I had a face like a potato. I walk into work with that knowledge every single day. I'm just a potato that won't quit. I'm a potato with some legs. Some have eyes, I've got legs." http://www.npr.org/2015/10/24/451403451/bill-murray-talks-kasbah He's got more than that, I think.  You should read the part where he talks about his kids.  True, and almost poetic. The movie may not be great, but I reckon it will be worth seeing.  I'm guessing that folks aren't ready to make fun of our (ongoing) adventures in Imperialism, the way they were ready to make fun of Korea, and Vietnam. It just takes awhile, and we're a pretty uptight nation these days... Here's a good retrospective of Bill's career: https://thedissolve.com/features/ca...

The Greatest Guy He Ever Knew

The Greatest Guy He Ever Knew John Wayne, of Maureen O'Hara. Maureen O'Hara, of John Wayne: "I was tough. I was tall. I was strong. I didn't take any nonsense from anybody. He was tough, he was tall, he was strong and he didn't take any nonsense from anybody. As a man and a human being, I adored him." As the film historian David Thomson once observed of her screen persona throughout her career, she was “inclined to thrust her hands on her hips, speak her mind and be told, ‘You’re pretty when you’re angry.’ ” Sadly, there was more than a little drama in her old age, with accusations of elder abuse: http://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/features/profiles/off-screen-family-saga-203777.html http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Maureen-OHaras-former-assistant-wins-suit-against-her-nephew.html Still, she had a better run of it than many. Blood, mud, lots of mud actually, glory, pain and the birth of a national myth. Henry V’s victory at Agincourt left posterity with a powerful tale of winning against the odds that began when the newly crowned king dug out his ancestor’s claim of being the actual King of France back in 1413 and ended with the nearly complete annihilation of a superior French army in northern France, a battle that marks the end of the Middle Ages and the dawn of modernity. Talking About Weeds

Talking About Weeds Eating them, too. I miss Roger Welsch's Postcards from Nebraska. Two years into Postcard, Welsch said Kuralt confided, “I thought we’d be lucky to get six stories out of Nebraska.” Ultimately, Welsch said, “we did over 200.” [a student said] "Being in Welsch’s class isn’t like being in a class at all. It’s like being in an audience." I asked a friend, "Is that an insult or a compliment?" "Well, Rog, actually being in your class isn’t like being in a class or in an audience. It’s like being in a congregation." And I thought, Oh, man, that’s it — I’m a preacher, not a teacher. It really is evangelism for me. "How do you make a living writing?" Huh

Huh A friend of mine's dad was from Kansas. He could say "Huh" about fifty different ways.  Only one or two were in any way congenial or complimentary. Originally shared by **** As an adult I discovered the fun of old-fashioned Midwestern innuendo: the way my aunts, say, could achieve the perfect degree of half-smile when extending their barely dead-toned goodbyes to my sister’s boyfriend, which told her how very much they disliked him. In fact, people from outside the Plains think they can mimic us by elongating some O's, but in truth we communicate far more in what we half-say, or fail to say entirely. To live in the Midwest is to experience two realities: the first, all sunshine and bland pleasantries among other potluck-suppering churchgoers; the other, a red-lit underworld where people relay vulgarities through the learned second language of euphemism, eye rolls and loaded silence. We are the alpha and omega of passive-aggressiveness. It is, like the corn we plan...

Our minds — in themselves — produce contents that will be overwhelming. To be successfully normal, then, we rather have to dumb ourselves down. Work with schizophrenics has taught me that when defenses against the complexities of the mind break down there can be a breakthrough of too much. Selves cave in. Closing The Gap

Closing The Gap "But there’s this huge gap between how folks go about their daily lives and how we talk about our common life and our political life. And people describe it as the distance between Washington and Main Street. But it’s not just Washington; it’s the way we talk about our politics, our foreign policy, our common endeavors. There’s this gap. And the thing I’ve been struggling with throughout my political career is how do you close the gap. There’s all this goodness and decency and common sense on the ground, and somehow it gets translated into rigid, dogmatic, often mean-spirited politics. And some of it has to do with all the filters that stand between ordinary people who are busy and running around trying to look after their kids and do a good job and do all the things that maintain a community, so they don’t have the chance to follow the details of complicated policy debates. They know they want to take care of somebody who’s sick, and they have a generous impulse. ...
