Preach It!

Image
Preach It! Originally shared by **** “For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche. In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfil themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happine...

Fought Like A Girl

Image
Fought Like A Girl Originally shared by Dirk Puehl #onthisday in 1921, the Austro-Hungarian socialite Princess Pauline Clémentine von Metternich, if nothing else famous for fighting the alleged first “emancipated duel” with swords near Vaduz in 1892, died at the age of 85 in Vienna. The Grand Dame of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, rival to fabled and well-beloved Empress Sisi, a patron of the arts, singer of Wagnerian arias, a gossip and winner of the first “emancipated duel” in 1892, ingredients of a story well worth to be told by the fireside of the #wunderkammer ‘s salon, when the lights are low and the brandy rolls heavily in old crystal tumblers. Reading it for yourself on http://wunderkammertales.blogspot.de/2015/09/avert-your-eyes-avert-your-eyes-you.html is the next best choice, of course. And thank you very much, Steven Spence, for reminding me of the story the other day. Depicted below is an early 20th century magazine illustration of the first "emancipated duel" ...

A Grand Day Out Originally shared by Meg L Everyday heroes.  Kees Veldboer and his wife Ineke, a nurse, started Stichting Ambulance Wens at their kitchen table - eight years on it has 230 volunteers, six ambulances and a holiday home, and is fast approaching 7,000 fulfilled wishes. Sometimes wishes are fulfilled the day they are made. Greeking

Greeking In B4 Lingua Franca... Originally shared by Alvin Stearns "It's Greek to me."  A common English idiom to indicate that something is not understandable--a meaning is there, but it is expressed in a confounding language. Two thousand years ago, much of the Near East and Europe understood one language.  Greek.  The Greeks were never just in Greece for very long.  Back then, they traveled to Egypt and set up trading communities.  They created cities along the coast of modern Turkey, from the Levant to the Black Sea.  Being Greek was not a national identity as we think of such things today.  It was a culture, a set of commonly shared ideas.  And it was certainly a language. The Greeks traded with and sometimes fought with everybody in their local Mediterranean world.  The Phoenicians (where they got their alphabet), the Egyptians (where they got many of their later religious ideas and icons), and many many barbarian people.  Who were people too, with lives and cultu...

I had to do an emergency pickup because of a tsunami alert. I think it was also because of a quake from Chile. So I got her and took her to the main police station where I was working as an admin sergeant in the Training Division. I explained that I was picking her up early because of a tsunami alert. When we got to the station, I introduced her to everyone in the office then made her do her homework. Then, around the time the tsunami was supposed to hit I took her to the roof helipad and peered over the wall at the seaward direction. The ocean lifted 2 inches. I couldn't tell. I think it was the first burn State Civil Defense gave us in a 30-plus year run of false alarms concerning earthquakes from way the hell east of us. Going Dutch

Going Dutch He just wasn’t that interested in his plots, and the reason, he explained, was that he was too interested in his characters, above all the bad guys. In his mind, he said, “I see convicts sitting around talking about a baseball game. I see them as kids. All villains have mothers.” Indeed, he was their mother. He picked out their clothes; he chose their names. (He was a champion namer—this was part of his “ear”: Mr. Woody, Jackie Garbo, Chili Palmer, Cundo Rey. One thug has a tiny little daughter named Farrah.) He gave them girlfriends, ways of speaking, things they liked to eat. And as they were flowering under the beam of his affection—riding around in their stolen cars, discussing their upcoming felonies—he tended to ignore the noncriminal element in his books: the police, the decent citizens, the people who might push the plot forward by preventing or solving the crimes. Regular people, he complained, “don’t talk with any certain sound.” http://www.nybooks.com/articles/ar...

But Is It Art?

But Is It Art? Sexting is the taking and sharing of nude or sexually explicit photos by computer or cell phone. While some states have enacted laws to deal specifically with teen sexting, North Carolina has not. In many states, including North Carolina, when sexting involves images of children under the age of 18, it violates state laws against child pornography, and teens can be prosecuted under laws intended to punish adult sex offenders. Although the pictures are illegal, sexual intercourse between 16-year-old teens is not. The age of consent for sexual activity in North Carolina is 16, and it dips younger than that for teens who are less than four years apart. "All manner of abhorrent human behaviors are represented in artwork. That doesn’t make the work, or even the artist, unethical for tackling such subjects." http://blog.art21.org/2010/03/26/the-nonexistence-of-unethical-art/#.VehuQdm9LCQ http://m.fayobserver.com/news/local/nc-law-teens-who-take-nude-selfie-photos-fac...
