"Where's The Salami?"

"Where's The Salami?"

I heard there would be a Salami...

Back in the day (around 1985) when my daughter was in the first grade. I had to do an emergency pickup because of a tsunami alert. I think it was also because of a quake from Chile. So I got her and took her to the main police station where I was working as an admin sergeant in the Training Division.

I explained that I was picking her up early because of a tsunami alert. When we got to the station, I introduced her to everyone in the office then made her do her homework. Then, around the time the tsunami was supposed to hit I took her to the roof helipad and peered over the wall at the seaward direction. The ocean lifted 2 inches. I couldn't tell. I think it was the first burn State Civil Defense gave us in a 30-plus year run of false alarms concerning earthquakes from way the hell east of us. (I think the Chilean tsunami alert announced today will take 15 hours to get to us.)

My daughter, who I had to carry so she could see over the retaining wall asked me, "where's the salami?"
