#onthisday in 1921, the Austro-Hungarian socialite Princess Pauline Clémentine von Metternich, if nothing else famous for fighting the alleged first “emancipated duel” with swords near Vaduz in 1892, died at the age of 85 in Vienna.

The Grand Dame of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, rival to fabled and well-beloved Empress Sisi, a patron of the arts, singer of Wagnerian arias, a gossip and winner of the first “emancipated duel” in 1892, ingredients of a story well worth to be told by the fireside of the #wunderkammer ‘s salon, when the lights are low and the brandy rolls heavily in old crystal tumblers.
