I think I'm going to bite the bullet and pay for a license to run the Google+ Importer, despite a certain amount of trepidation about what it doesn't say on the tin.
I don't think there is that much value to the ruminations, asides, and photos I've posted, but there is some, I think.
Like all Old People, I find myself repeating certain likes and dislikes over the years, so I expect I'll consolidate certain posts into canonical items that will be added to.
I'm also inclined, due to the ephemeral nature of links, to store snapshots of external pages. Not sure what format I'll choose, or what rights issues will ensue.
I've downloaded Google Takeout a few times. It is a remarkably unstructured mess. No wonder the Algorithm can't figure me out.
I'm likely to try importing to Blogger and Wordpress, see how that shakes out.
Not sure how the "social" part will work. Probably Twitter, Pluspora?
One of my problems with Social Media is Oversharing. The Ploos had reasonable tools for limiting spam and throttling the firehose. Twitter does not. Twitter also enforces a kind of manic concision. Don't say much, but say it as often as possible. Who can possibly be that fascinating?
Dia/Pluspora seems to be in its infancy, with some decidedly strong minded UX decisions (No editing? Really?). But it is up and running, favors decentralization and federation, and might turn into to something more usable, and worth paying for.
I ended up with most of my posts public, and can't say I'm all that exercised about not having "private" ways to communicate my anecdotes and musings.
I will say again to all that I follow and have interacted with, that y'all are a remarkably interesting bunch of folks, who have behaved surprisingly well. I've appreciated what y'all have contributed, and enjoyed little bits of affirmation from your comments and +1s.
I'll take a whack at establishing alternate monikers at other places by the end of the year. I'll also be taking some notes about where y'all have said you're heading.
See you at the rondeyview!

I'm on both Pluspora and MeWe. Pluspora I'm not overly impressed with - its UI is incredibly boring - whereas MeWe is colourful and snazzy, but I'll probably stay on both.
ReplyDeleteI also fell victim to Twitter's lack of controls on oversharing. It's probably for the best that I stopped using it around the time G+ came into being. I also think I'm going to pay up for the G+ Importer, despite some concerns about what's not on the tin. Other than that, I'll hang around here until they kick me off. I've not found another place I want to spend my time so I may just take a new look at the latest innovations in blogging tools (I say that seriously, despite how silly it sounds) and spin up something on my own again.
ReplyDeleteOut of interest, how much is the Importer licence, and is it the same thing as Takeout, or are they different things?
ReplyDeletecatty _big $20 USD. Not the same as Takeout. Takeout gives you data that "theoretically" can be used in some other way, but no tools to do so. The Importer allows for reposting to Blogger, Wordpress, possibly other formats.
ReplyDeleteDrew McCarthy Thanks. I'm finding it difficult to get my head around this.
ReplyDeletecatty _big It is a bit of a mess. I'm sorry not to have provided more specific information, but my post is more about expressing intention than reporting on results and describing the process. I expect to do that, later.
