Georgia Crackers

Georgia Crackers
Confederate Cannon Balls
A Tangy Subtle Appetizer With A Hint Of Racism.
“I stopped by to see Cookie Byrd of the Byrd Cookie Company, Savannah Georgia, to tell him I still liked his half-sweet, half-salty sesame Benne Wafers and the spicy cracker nuggets, Confederate Cannon Balls. Dressed in a Southern plantation-owner’s white suit, and with more than a bit of the South in his mouth, he told me he had just sold those crackers to one of the big stores in New York, but he couldn’t remember which. We put our heads together and determined it was Macy’s, and then he said, pointing to a picture of an Aunt Jemima mammy on his label, “You see this? Well, the buyer at Macy’s told me it would have to be taken off the boxes sent to him. Darndest thing I ever heard of in my life.”
New York magazine, 1973.
