Colophons

Colophons

A method of publisher branding in the modern age, with some noted artists contributing to the designs of several mentioned here.

Some publishers also included information about typefaces, typesetting, paper, binding, and printing.

Even further back, they might include curses:

Whoever steals this book

Will hang on a gallows in Paris,

And, if he isn’t hung, he’ll drown,

And, if he doesn’t drown, he’ll roast,

And, if he doesn’t roast, a worse end will befall him.

  1. Nice - many books I've read that were printed during WWII had a statement that they followed government regulations concerning paper usage. I always found remarks about typefaces interesting.
