  1. Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 by Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace is a fascinating read. The history of fresh water problems - ponds, marsh, creeks, drainage, stagnation, wells, wastewater, canals, aqueducts, and access to potable water - could be collated to make a fine stand alone reference book.
