I know folks that were founders of the Alliance of Baptists, an association that was founded in opposition to the Fundamentalist Takeover.

The Baptist Joint Committee was originally a Press Relations function of the Southern Baptists, but it eventually grew into an organization that effectively and strongly fought for the separation of Church and State.
Under James Dunn's leadership, Reagan's attempts to strengthen civil religion were curtailed, and the BJC survived having its funding removed by the Southern Baptists.

The White Heteronormative Patriarchy is still alive and well in the Baptist Church, but it is changing for the better. Mahan Siler's eventual successor was Nancy Petty.
