The Black Hole
The Black Hole
For a couple of days, now, I've been trying to post a New Yorker article originally posted by Irina T.
But der Goog won't let me post, reshare, or nuttin'. And as is Google's usual wont, they don't respond to questions or complaints of any kind.
There have been a number of posts in my stream lately about ethics, software, and tech. Frankly, I can think of no other industry that worships Freedom From Responsibility as much as the Tech industry does. We would all be outraged if physical products were allowed to fail as often, as inscrutably, and at such scale. But everybody yawns when the Tech Industry does it.
Yawn.

Is it possible that Irina T. disabled reshares? That is an option for every post we make.
ReplyDeleteNope. That would only explain why resharing would fail. The Algorithm won't let this account post that particular link, no matter what. The GUI says the link posts, but it doesn't. Going straight to the bit bucket somewhere.
ReplyDeleteDrew McCarthy ah. Can you share the link in a comment here?
ReplyDeleteApparently, but that kind of defeats the purpose.
ReplyDeleteDrew McCarthy Just curious - if you shared the link, I'd try to post it and see if it restricts me as well.
ReplyDeleteHahahahahaha. I posted the link in a comment after your question. And it showed me that it posted. But it only posted my followup comment about "apparently, but defeating the purpose." Google Gaslighting!
ReplyDeleteLet's see if it will let me repost the public share:https://plus.google.com/+IrinaTcherednichenko/posts/VxouvYNTLbi

Heh. That apparently works. This, and examples of the Algorithm flagging natural sounds on Youtube as copyright violations, is why I don't trust even the concept of self driving cars.
ReplyDeleteDrew McCarthy it'll get better :)
ReplyDeleteDrew McCarthy have you tried posting from a different device? Like, if you use a phone mostly, try G+ from a PC browser. Or vise versa. I'm curious to know if it is the app (could point to local machine issue) or your user account (which could point to something algorithmic.)
ReplyDeleteOf course. Closed, quit, signed out, signed in, cleared caches and cookies, slaughtered a goat and poked through the entrails. Just like I used to have to do with SCSI chains. To no avail.
ReplyDeleteDrew McCarthy So you've tried on both a mobile device and Desktop/Laptop computer? iOS or Android? Which computer Internet browser. Just being a curious nerd - if my questions are annoying, tell me to blow a goat.
ReplyDeleteiOS G+ app and Mac desktop Chrome.
