I'll just point out that many of the same folks who advise us to "trust the system" of perfectly designed automatically proportional spacing in body text, don't even think twice (heh) about tweaking kerning in "artistic" magazine layouts or logos, where we're supposed to trust their even keener and more discerning artistic dezziner eyes.
