Doing Hard Time

Image
Doing Hard Time The spirit of Johnny Cash is everywhere at the prison-yard gig. Los Tigres and crew walk through the same massive security gates that Cash and his musicians did on that cloudy, winter morning. When Cash played his prison show in '68, the inmate population at Folsom was most white. Today, it's mostly black and Latino. The magic number of 50 hangs in the air for Los Tigres del Norte. It's been 50 years since Cash's performance and 50 years since the Mexican band played its first gig in the United States, which, ironically, was also at a prison. https://www.npr.org/2018/04/18/603304745/los-tigres-del-norte-perform-at-folsom-prison-50-years-after-johnny-cash Originally shared by Semicentenary Project

The Tapes Of Wrath

The Tapes Of Wrath This little jewel was put together for the Radio and Television Correspondents Association's Gala back in 1983. As Wikipedia says, the RTCA Dinner is not to be confused with the higher profile White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. If you aren't of a Certain Age, or didn't work in and around TV News, you may have a little trouble recognizing the players in this set piece, but some of them are still around, making trouble. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I think I probably have a copy of this on 3/4" Umatic, somewhere. Maybe someday I'll make an annotated subtitle identifying all the culprits. https://vimeo.com/112105951 As Mara Wolynski would say, we're No. 1! https://vimeo.com/112105951

"Li’s problem is not only that he is poor and struggling to save enough money to buy an apartment of his own; it is that in China there are simply too many men. This is a country where marriage confers social status, and where parental pressure to produce grandchildren is intense. Bachelors like Li are dismissively branded as “bare branches” for failing to expand the family tree. But as any forester knows, bare branches pose a danger, and not just to themselves." We're all likely to have to work a little harder to put out fires and smash the patriarchy, I reckon. Bite Of The Apple "On either side, Thalia saw the tapering stalks of the Museum of Cybernetics, each structure rising at least a hundred metres into the air, each surmounted by a smooth blue-grey sphere, each sphere marked with a symbol from the hallowed history of information processing. There was the ampersand, which had once symbolised a primitive form of abstraction. There was an ever-tumbling hourglass, still the universal symbol for an active computational process. There was the apple with a chunk missing which (so Thalia had been led to believe) commemorated the suicidal poisoning of the info-theorist Turing himself." From Aurora Rising by Alastair Reynolds. It's Complicated

It's Complicated Molly Ringwald writes about re-examining her work with John Hughes in The Breakfast Club. She was apparently shocked to discover that Hughes contributed a lot of crass humor to the Lampoon. I'll have to confess that I enjoyed the crassness of National Lampoon every bit as much as I enjoyed the surrealism and hedonism of underground comix. Hughes film work was decidedly softer, but apparently not quite balanced enough for Ringwald, in hindsight. I think it is hard enough for art to capture a moment, a trend, an outlook in time, much less to represent all of them, balanced and contrapuntally. But I'll certainly acknowledge that even the least of entertainments are worthy of examination and criticism, and Hughes did some good work. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/what-about-the-breakfast-club-molly-ringwald-metoo-john-hughes-pretty-in-pink

Toolmonger No More

Toolmonger No More We're coming up on the fiftieth anniversary of the Whole Earth Catalog, subtitled "Access To Tools." I discovered early, a fascination with making things (when I wasn't breaking them). To make things, fix things, modify things, sometimes just to understand things --- you need tools. I grew up in the Time Before The Internet, when there were catalogs. Sears and Roebuck, Monkey Wards, Allied Radio, J.C. Whitney. And then, of course, the Bible of the Counterculture, the Whole Earth Catalog. J. Baldwin was the tools, design, and nomadics editor for the WEC and its descendants. He also spent a number of years teaching and lecturing, and designed and built a number of things. He was a disciple of Buckminster Fuller. One of the many things he wrote about was the Highly Evolved Toolbox, a truck turned into a rolling multipurpose shop. I wanted one of those almost as bad as I wanted to crew on the NCC-1701 Enterprise. J. Baldwin, in print, seemed to b...

Oh, Happy Day

Oh, Happy Day Mr. Hawkins, part of a musical family, was studying interior design at Laney College in Oakland, Calif., in the late 1960s and working with a group he and his friend Betty Watson had put together, the Northern California State Youth Choir. The group recorded an album, “Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord,” which they intended to sell locally to raise money for a trip to Southern California for a gospel competition. “It was recorded on a friend’s little two-track machine,” Mr. Hawkins told The Modesto Bee in 2008. “It was never intended for commercial purposes at all.” The record rendered songs of praise with a rhythm-and-blues sensibility. A disc jockey at the Bay Area FM station KSAN, Abe Kesh, began playing one particular track, “Oh Happy Day.” The catchy song spread, and, with the group renamed the Edwin Hawkins Singers, it was released as a single and eventually reached No. 4 on the Billboard pop chart and No. 2 on the R&B chart.
