I Am That I Am
I Am That I Am
Exodus 3:14
I agree that that Google's AMP is horrible, but there is a certain strong element of naivete in discussing the internet, and electronic data storage in general, in terms of immutability.
Just like with civil engineering, the best test is time, and the whole shebang hasn't been around that long, and has generally not been designing in terms of compatibility and longevity.
Be nice if it did, but we don't seem to be headed in that direction. Might be interesting to discuss why that is...

Also, I am reminded of the struggles I have faced in archiving emails to be accessible to various clients and operating systems.
ReplyDeleteonly peepaws use eMail but only to forward softcore and jokes
ReplyDeleteWell, email is still used for bidness. Sometimes. For varying definitions of bidness and used.
ReplyDeleteIt's one thing to say "email is immutable", in that it cannot be changed.
ReplyDeleteAnd there are various hacks around that, notably the concept of content signing, which may not prevent changes to that content, but does show when the content has been changed. Using PKI technologies such as PGP or S/MIME.
The recipient or administrator of an email account or system can, of course, at any time change the content of a message, by diving into the message store and editing it directly.
But the idea that the sender might, at any arbitrary later date change the content and/or meaning of what was sent is absolute and complete motherfucking idiocy.
What in the FUCK are Google thinking?
Mind, there's another possible option, which is to use email as some message journal and having in addition to email some state-representation engine which shows the current status of some particular activity, process, project, etc. It is possible to do that now.
(This is pretty much what patch-based software management systems have done for decades, which is a useful proof-of-concept system, though quite possibly not the UI/UX one might care to foist on a userbase of 3-4 billion.)
My experience with Google across multiple products: Search, G+, Android, Gmail, Maps, Drive, and more, is leading me to, with every-increasing concern and conviction, seek out alternative solutions. The company are digging their own grave, and quickly.
