Fighting Over The Remote Control

Fighting Over The Remote Control Originally shared by Eric Hansen This is going to be a very tricky court case. What happened is two nerds were fighting over a video game online. One threatened 'swatting' to the other, and the other provided a fake address. Cops show up at the address and shoot dead the first person they see, because that's what cops do. So, the caller should be prosecuted for murder, right? But you've got to prove calling the cops usually results in a death, and cop unions are going to fight that characterization. BUT, at the same time, the cops are definitely going to want to prosecute this dude vigorously. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/police-arrest-man-suspected-swatting-preceded-deadly-police-shooting-n833576

Tengwar Typewriter

Tengwar Typewriter No word on whether the kerning is supposed to be different in High Elvish and Low Elvish. Originally shared by Andres Soolo For when you need to edit your Elvish articles so much that a Tengwar typewriter just won't do. As from version 3.2, OpenOffice.org (OOo) has native support for Graphite fonts on the Windows and Linux platforms. In other words, Tengwar Telcontar will now be usable out of the box, without the need for any arcane software or plug-ins. There are even options for fine-tuning the placement of niqud , which can get a bit tricky because like Ulfila's Gothic and unlike Coptic, a few Tengwar have ascenders raising significantly beyond the ordinary boundaries of a line of text: When silme or esse carries a tehta, it can be placed either to the right or to the left of the ascender. This feature lets you select what behaviour you prefer. I have not examined Tolkien’s usage carefully, but on a cursory inspection it seems that his placement is influen...

Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Won't You Be My Neighbor? Originally shared by Ralf Haring "I went with Jackson to see the trailers at the Missouri River Correctional Center, a minimum-security facility nicknamed “the Farm.” Located on the rural outskirts of Bismarck, it is surrounded by cottonwood trees and backs onto the river for which it is named. There are no fences. The day I visited, the grounds were swaddled in a sparkling blanket of snow; prisoners strolled along walking paths in puffy orange jackets, their breath steamy in the cold. Some of the men were placed here for lesser crimes; others are approaching the end of lengthy sentences that began in the maximum-security state prison." "Warden James Sayler and Joey Joyce, his deputy, were quick to embrace the Norway philosophy. They immediately began devising ways for inmates to earn more freedom—shopping excursions, day passes home, and even the right to wear civilian clothes on-site. They also scaled up an existing work-release program so...

Getting Carded

Getting Carded FYI, the best local BBQ joint in town is Cash Only. It's worth noting that the failure of micropayments means that the background transactional systems (and their tariffs) are not as efficient and cost effective as they could be. Not to mention the squeeze this will put on folks lower down the food chain, who can least afford it. The Map Is Not The Territory

The Map Is Not The Territory Google Maps obviously has huge advantages in data collection and correlation over Apple Maps. One might ought to add, at the expense of privacy. Still, the operating premise of both systems is to Trust The Algorithm. Which works well, except when it doesn't. Labeling choices in both systems make it difficult, verging on impossible, to navigate to places the Algorithm is ignorant of. I'm always impressed when the system accurately represents reality. However, that happens less often than you might think. Originally shared by Kevin Clarke (ksclarke) https://www.justinobeirne.com/google-maps-moat

Di-Dah-Di-Dah-Di-Dah

Di-Dah-Di-Dah-Di-Dah Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh I recall sending a few telegrams long ago. "Belgium's telegram service is about to stop. Stop. One hundred and seventy-one years after the first electrical message was transmitted down a line running alongside the railway between Brussels and Antwerp the final dispatch will be sent and received on 29 December. The fact that this 19th-Century technology is still up and running in the age of Instagram and Snapchat may seem rather odd - especially when you consider that the UK, which invented the telegram in the 1830s, abandoned it as long ago as 1982. The United States followed suit in 2006 and even India, which had been by far the world's biggest market for the telegram, finally closed its system down in 2013. Just 10 businesses and a handful of individual customers have kept the Belgian system going until now. It has been chiefly used by bailiffs, who had need of a system which provided legal guarantees of dispatch an...

After The Fall

Image
After The Fall From Wikipedia: "Although After the Fall remains very unpopular with critics, it is revered in the academic arena as a deep and intellectual play, albeit difficult to follow since it does not follow the conventional sequence of events found in typical works. The play remains one of Miller's less popular works, attributed in part to the non-linear, often surrealistic nature of the plot and setting; all but the initial and final seconds of the play take place in the protagonist's brain, which is reflected by a set comprising a single chair before a concentration camp guard tower, which is itself surrounded by a giant, winding ramp made up of crevices, pits, and abutments. The plot unfolds over a period of time, and due to the non-linear nature of the story, characters and occurrences appear as the protagonist remembers them. Reflecting the nature of the mind, they often disappear and their stories remain unresolved until later in the play, when they spontaneou...

Bardic Battle

Bardic Battle Although, to be fair, there were instances where bards begged off the fighting, reasoning that if they were to be killed or wounded, there would be no one to tell of their sides heroic deeds... Consolation

Consolation The happy ending still beckons, and it is in hope of grasping it that we go on. The poet WisÅ‚awa Szymborska caught the writer’s dilemma of choosing between hard realities and the longing for the happy ending. She called it “consolation.” Darwin. They say he read novels to relax, but only certain kinds: nothing that ended unhappily. If he happened on something like that, enraged, he flung the book into the fire. True or not, I’m ready to believe it. http://www.vulture.com/2017/11/annie-proulx-national-book-award-speech.html
