WHY THE EBOOK EDITION OF THE PEOPLE'S POLICE IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE
This weird situation takes some explaining. Tor, for whatever reason, priced their ebook edition of THE PEOPLE'S POLICE at about $15, way too expensive, not merely in my opinion and that of some complaining would-be buyers, but as a business move, when Amazon cut the $28 cover price of the hardcover to $15.52. Who but someone who hated ink and paper would pay the same price for an ebook instead of for a hardcover?
And since a trade paperback would have to have roughly the same price as what Amazon sold the hardcover for, who at all in their right mind would buy a paperback for the same price as a hardcover? So until all the hardcovers left are gone, neither Tor, nor another publisher, nor me self-publishing, can publish a trade paperback, thanks to Amazon. So Tor gave up, reverted THE PEOPLE'S POLICE to me, and took down their $15 ebook edition as that required.
However Tor has the right to sell their remaining hardcovers, albeit at whatever price Amazon chooses, and until they do, a major trade paperback, indeed even a self-published one, will be undercut by Amazon's $15.52 price for the hardcover. But once this blockage is gone, a PEOPLE'S POLICE trade paperback becomes a valuable property indeed and will be published one way or another. And since that property is now mine, I pledge that soon as this is possible an ebook will once more be available, and priced at something reasonable like $8.
So until then the only available edition of THE PEOPLE'S POLICE will be the hardcover selling on Amazon for $15.52. There are something like 1200 such books which you can buy for the future trade paperback price while they last. Since Tor never printed enough copies for the hardcover to earn out I don't make a penny from the sales of the remaining books blocking the publication of a trade paperback, my only interest in seeing them sold as quickly as possible is making a trade paperback publishable as soon as possible.
So I encourage y'all to take advantage of what Amazon is doing to my disadvantage. I'll earn royalties from the eventual trade paper back but nevertheless I encourage potential readers not to wait for the trade paperback! Buy the hardcover now for the same price!
Is this an offer even I don't exactly understand? Well yeah, but if I wanted to buy THE PEOPLE'S POLICE as a reader, an offer I could hardly refuse.
