The USCG Commandant remarked that more drugs could be seized if cutters were available for deployment. Currently, intelligence of the drug trade out paces operational capability for interdiction. That's a 180º turn from my experiences.
Part of that, I imagine, has to do with the aging fleet. The other part might have something to do with appealing to law and order/risk management sensibilities in order to fix that.
A federal tax on legalized marijuana would likely fund several new asset purchases. (I suppose that is a reasoning reserved for when ships were made of wood, rather than irony.)
