I'll Keep Holding On
I'll Keep Holding On
I've wasted all my tears
Wasted all of those years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Cause nothing ever could oh yeah
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
Holding, holding, holding
That's all I have today
It's all I have to say...

Well. It was either this, or "If You Don't Know Me By Now"...
It isn't so much that the Democrats have to move left, as the Democrats have to move, and especially move past the old status quo.

Since I doubt neutralizing him (or rather the issues he's raising) is possible...
ReplyDeleteAlistair McHarg Are you suggesting the establishment Democrats need to outvote the "Trump contingent" or the "Democratic and Independent contingent" that supports the ideas that Bernie has been promoting?
ReplyDeleteI think the train has left the station on neutralizing Bernie (the whole of the DNC's effort this last cycle was dedicated to that (and, as an aside, perhaps the reason for the failure is that "you can neutralize a man, but you can't neutralize an idea" (to bend a historical quote)).
The establishment Democrats now need to decide whether they can win an election without all the people attracted to Bernie's message. From the number of potential Democratic front-runners who are jumping on the Medicare for All ticket, I think the answer (from their perspective, at least) is clear (despite what Pelosi and Schumer and the old guard might think).
Though Bernie may not be a Democrat, there are a large number of Democrats who are Bernie supporters. You are right, though, that in many cases they are not "tied" to the Democratic party.
ReplyDeleteI'm a prime example. I've been a registered Democrat for 95% of my time as a registered voter. I vote on issues though, not because of an allegiance to the Democratic party. You might say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...
"Dems are currently romancing the BS crowd because they think they need the numbers - nothing could be further from the truth."
The Republicans are the only ones who can win elections without numbers (thanks to gerrymandering at the local level and the electoral college at the federal level). Democrats win elections with numbers, and numbers are won by inspiring people to vote for them, imho.
Democrats that don't learn the mistakes of their past are bound to repeat them.
I agree with the last sentence, but I think the problem is with the "brilliant platform" part. There is significant disagreement within the Democratic party about what a "brilliant platform" would include.
ReplyDeleteYou might say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one... I hope some day you'll join us, and the Democratic party will be as one.
