We had some friends that were going to be south of Columbia, SC, for the eclipse, but we weren't sure we'd be able to make it that far, between schedule restrictions and traffic.
Looking on a NASA map, I noticed that Winnsboro was within the total eclipse path. I've never been there, but I had a musical connection to the place, by the songs mentioned in an earlier post.
Google turned up this page: http://kristenlthompson.com/eclipse2017/
Turns out, Davidson College had assembled an expedition to Winnsboro in 1900, to view a previous eclipse, and Kristen L. Thompson, with the Davidson College Physics Department, and the Fairfield County Museum of Winnsboro teamed up to host a series of events culminating with an Eclipse Celebration at Garden Street Park Ballfield.
To top it off, they had 2700 pairs of genuwine NASA eclipse glasses to give away. And we had not been able to find any of the pesky things locally.
Traffic was awful, and we made it to the park with only minutes to spare before the start. But everything was wonderfully organized, by all the various staff and volunteers. Lots of cold water and cookies were handed out, and the overall level of geekery was sky high. (See what I did there?)
We especially enjoyed the inflatable models of the planets stationed at appropriate distances on the ballfield.
We had a terrific time watching and celebrating with folks both young and old, played obligatory punny tunes, and had a simply stunning view of this event. I had a fine time showing off my Cheerioscope to the younger set.
There were clouds around (and we heard that it rained heavily in Columbia) but our view was free and clear. And as I mentioned in an earlier post, we had a Post-ApocEcliptic Dinner at the Barn Express that could not be beat.
Kudos and thanks to all the folks that participated and organized this event. It was AWESOME.
