Salting Nannie
Salting Nannie
There seem to be a lot of ghosts in the South. Or maybe we just have the kind of people who notice them more. I'm pretty sure that we're not the only place on earth with sad histories to tell.
This story bears mentioning because of Julian Carr. A lot of things and places are named after him, because he was wealthy, and fond of self-aggrandizement.
For example, he was known as "General", despite holding no higher than a private's rank serving in the 3rd NC Cavalry.

There also isn't much question that Julian Carr was racist, although you'll rarely find that mentioned in most generic history texts.

I'm not sure how much it's going to improve things to remove every named thing or memorial that was associated with slavery, racism, and all the other possible bad behaviors. But I reckon we should at least be talking about it, more.

I wonder if someone will ask Mike Cross to rename this song:

"The historic house we saw in the ad was big and strangely cheap." The beginning of pretty much every haunted house story ever told.
