- annually, over 2 million emergency room visits in the U.S. are related to major dental problems, which most emergency departments have no facilities to treat, so the problems are addressed with antibiotics and opioids). This costs over $1.6B per year.
- the huge increase in use of prescription drugs, over the past few decades, has worsened dental problems as many drugs cause dry mouth, which leads to more cavities. This would be aside from the effects of a worsening diet.

On another note: In case you were wondering, Canada may have a fairly decent public health system, but there's no dental coverage here either. You only get that through social assistance programs, or a union or employer's extended medical benefits.
