Ad from a 1960 Chicago White Sox scoresheet/program.
Three years after Joe McCarthy's death, FWIW.
The company still exists, and even has a web page tribute to their old ad-man, with several of his other ads (but not this one, for some reason).

Is that a jar of Grey Poupon in Mrs. Early Wynn's fridge? Where's my rubber hose?
ReplyDeleteI'm going to stick my neck out here -- er, I mean, at risk of being rebuffed for a contrarian viewpoint I'm going to hazard an educated guess, and suggest this might not be an expression of McCarthyism or Bircherism or an approval of lynching. It's far more likely the guy was making fun of Birchers or McCarthyites and that his audience would have taken it in that spirit. I'd even hazard a guess Bill Gaines was the inspiration here.
