Basket Case

Basket Case

Old things sometimes possess amazing transformative powers.

A slight touch can act as effectively as an Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator to make core structures cease to exist.

I should have known better than to attempt to eliminate a relatively small, pesky drip under the kitchen sink on a day when all the hardware stores were closed, due to the SNOWPOCALYPSE. But…

Examination revealed that the pot metal slip nut on the sink strainer basket was both cracked, and corrosively welded to the basket. The leak was due to water leaking through this failing joint. Merely examining this caused both the nut and the basket to reach a state of utter uselessness with remarkable rapidity. Didn’t even have to wave a power tool in its general direction.

Fortunately, I happened to have a high dollar Kohler strainer basket in inventory, a costly reminder of the fickleness of a certain remodel client some years back.

The next question would be whether the old basket could be removed without transmogrifying the 1960’s avocado sink into scrap metal art.
And whether I had enough pliable plumber’s putty on hand to do a proper install.

After a fair amount of beating, banging, and swearing, removal was achieved. Just enough putty was found. Hooray!

Also, I garnered praise from my Better Half when the Horrible Hole of Hoarding produce a Needed and Useful thing. Shiny, too. Bonus!

  3. Excellent save since all the stores were closed! That would never happen to me, I always have to go back to the hardware store twice during a project. :)

  4. Well, at a certain point, I was considering a liberal application of JB Weld and Duct Tape, with a Drip Bucket for Backup.

  5. This reminds me of my efforts to put my Firesign Theatre novelty license plate frame into deployment... and how screw extractors can totally screw you. Self-welding metal is awesome! until you need to remove it.
