On The March

On The March

I reckon I'm going. I don't always agree with Rev. Barber, and I'm not always happy with what the NAACP has turned itself into, both nationally, and locally.

But I can't disagree with the need to protest the current status quo of police behavior, and this time, it's happened close enough to home that I should show up and fuss about it.

Because, like it or not, police behavior is a local issue.

Been awhile since I've been arrested, might break a streak.

My take on the situation is that Keith Scott was guilty of bad judgement, but he shouldn't have been killed for it. I think that the cops pretty much followed accepted policies and procedures in this instance, and that the investigation will support that.

Doesn't mean I think they did it right, just that they did what is currently expected.

I think that police are taught to be hypervigilant and proactive to threats, these days. They are not taught that they are amongst neighbors, and that drawing their service weapon is one of the last things they should do, and not the first. I think that's a mistake, and the sooner we adopt training and policy in that direction, the better.

I think that police are underpaid, and under appreciated. They are forced to deal with some of the most difficult people and situations that we, as a society, have. But those problems are not best solved with lethal force, and it's worrisome to me that this is not more clearly understood by more people.
