The Catch-22 of this is that folks are being victimized... but not by the things they are frightened by... which leads to some bad outcomes...

"When told to fear a particular outgroup, on average people who score low in authoritarianism will be like, 'I’m not that worried about that,' while people who score high in authoritarianism will be like, 'Oh, my god! I’m worried about that, because the world is a dangerous place.'"
In other words, what might look on the surface like bigotry was really much closer to Stenner's theory of "activation": that authoritarians are unusually susceptible to messages about the ways outsiders and social changes threaten America, and so lash out at groups that are identified as objects of concern at that given moment.

I'm way more concerned about getting killed in a car accident on the way to work than getting blown up in a terrorist attack. And the numbers corroborate my priorities. Yet so many people tweet about their worry on getting struck by lightning (or something equally improbable) as they drive 85 mph.
ReplyDeleteYep. But you are evaluating risks and risk avoidance more rationally than these folks.
