I get that drivers expect people will scurry out of the intersection when a car approaches in a way that inanimate objects cannot, and that this is a rational assumption because that's what usually happens. It's not driver expectations that are the problem. The point here is that by altering the physical shape of the road we can alter driver (and pedestrian and cyclist) behavior.
